God, Make Me Uncomfortable

God, Make Me Uncomfortable by Auri Jones #Christian #Fiction

Five Stars Love it! ~ Review by Timothy K.

Book Description:

The Comfurt family is perfect. At least, that is what they've trained everyone, including themselves, to think. But now, as the facade becomes harder to keep up, it's plain to see that there needs to be a change. With the guidance of some new friends, Brian and Erica and their three children Jackson, Jordan, and Jimmy will accept a challenge that will teach them how to pray and endure some tough roads ahead.

This first book in the Abandoned Prayer series offers you to take the same challenge that the Comfurts do and give you insight, guidance, and encouragement along the way to seeking a God who is our comfort in the midst of Uncomfortable.

EXCERPT:
A slight breeze drifted through an open window in the upstairs loft. All was quiet accept for the light rustle of the wind in the trees outside. The smell of fresh air and nature enhanced the senses and gave a calming effect as Jordan wavered in a semi-conscious state.

“Jordan.” Lizzie dragged out her name in a whisper just in case her friend wasn’t ready to be woken. “You still want to get up with me?”

“Uhh.” A small groan emerged from Jordan’s lips. That was the only answer she could muster at the moment, and she wasn’t going to push herself to respond any further. Her roommate knew that it was a miracle to even get that response from her. Lizzie shrugged.

“Okay, then. I’ll just…”

“I’m—getting up. I'm trying,” Jordan groaned again. She forced open one eye to see the blond-haired, smiling ball of energy staring down at her. “You’re a freak, you know that.”

“You love me,” Lizzie laughed throwing the covers off of her friend. “Besides, you’re the one who wanted to get up with me and Tyler this morning to see what it’s like on a farm.”

Jordan groaned again, but slowly rolled her body to the edge of the bed and let the fall onto the floor wake her up. It had been fascinating for her to be here at Lizzie’s home. No one would ever suspect that she was a farm girl, Jordan thought. She just didn’t fit the mold at school. Maybe it was just the stereotype that Jordan has associated with farm families. She had grown up with a couple of them, and they had always reminded her of the Duggars and their nineteen kids. Lizzie was far from a Duggar. Yet while somewhat of a girly-girl with city girl fashion at school, once they arrived at the Daniels’ house, Lizzie suddenly seemed to fit perfectly into the country lifestyle she was used to which was new to Jordan. Her family, though, fit perfectly into the picture Jordan had in mind. Mr. Daniels had talked her ear off on the car ride there with a thick twang in his voice. Every once in a while, his loud, full laugh would send a sudden jolt to Jordan’s heart, which in turn, made Lizzie laugh, too. Stories about his childhood seemed to leak into every topic of conversation, and Jordan could only imagine the endless story times he would have when he had grandchildren. Lizzie’s mother could have been a model in all due sense of the word. It wasn’t hard to realize where Lizzie had gotten her natural beauty. She understood why Lizzie never cared too much for make-up. Her mom looked like she never had to touch the stuff or needed it. Tyler was Lizzie’s twin, and though he was only a few minutes older, you could already tell that he made that difference count as much as possible. Lizzie pushed aside all of the immediate teasing she received from him and focused on getting him and Jordan talking. Apparently, all of the “promises” not to set her up with Tyler were false. He didn't seem to notice though or if he did, he didn’t mind.

“She used to be more of a country bumpkin,” Tyler noted during dinner the night before.

“She used to roll around in the dirt and beat up boys—she was more of a boy than me.”

“Your sister always acted like a girl,” Mrs. Daniels kicked at Tyler underneath the table.

“No, it’s true, honey,” her husband said. “Lizzie was a boy.”

“I was not!” Lizzie exclaimed with an incredulous laugh. Tyler smiled at Jordan.

“But she got into dresses and boy bands and stuff; so, dad shipped her off to Willards. She wasn’t any good on the farm anymore. Still isn't.” This time, Lizzie kicked him.

Now, the morning air slowly started to wake Jordan up as she threw on some old work clothes that Lizzie had tossed her. Jordan wrinkled her nose at the musty smelly boots and worn jeans and sweatshirt. Lizzie laughed.

“Oh, you're going to smell and look worse after we're done, prissy girl.”

“You are not the same girl I asked to be my roommate,” Jordan said in pretend disgust.

“You've changed.”

“Yeah, pretty sure, I asked you to be my roommate”, Lizzie said, “and you happily accepted me.” Fog covered the beautiful green country side in a mist as the forest animals realized that it was time for the insane farm people to get up, and they scurried back into their forest homes. Tyler laughed at Jordan and handed her some gloves as she entered into the barn behind his sister.

“You gonna make it?” She nodded.

“Just tell me what to do.” He smiled.

Milking the cows was fun. Lizzie marveled at how fast Jordan caught on, even with Tyler giving her a hard time by squirting her. Jordan would have squirted back if she didn't think that the cow beside her wouldn't take offense somehow. They looked much bigger in person and very intimidating when you were squatted down beside them. After that, the girls went and gathered eggs from the hen house, fed the horses, and joined Tyler in cleaning out the stalls. The stalls weren’t so fun. Jordan felt like she could gag at the smell.

“How do you get used to this?” Tyler frowned, but then nodded in comprehension.
“It takes a good while. After you’ve been on the farm for a while, you can start to tell the difference between different types of manure.”

“Ugh! That’s not something I’d brag about,” she said. Surprisingly, the chores went by faster than Jordan had thought they would. She was excited because after breakfast, the whole family was taking her to see her first rodeo, and Tyler was even participating in it.

“Does he—ride bulls?” Lizzie shook her head.

“My mom would have a fit if he did bull riding. He does saddle bronc riding and steer wrestling.” She laughed at Jordan’s perplexed look. “You’ll see later. Right now, Ty and I are going to show you something.”

A few minutes later, Jordan found herself up on one of the young fillies while Tyler brought two other horses out for him and his sister. All of the horses were named after hymns. It was a tradition that Mr. Daniels continued on from his father. Tyler brought out Blessed Assurance and Joyful for them to ride.

“So, I’ve never ridden a horse before, guys,” Jordan confessed biting her lip. “I just get on and say ‘go’ right?” They both laughed.

“This is Amazing Grace,” Lizzie said rubbing the horse’s nose. “She’s almost four. She’s a fast one when she wants to be, but she’s also very laid back and easy to handle.

With some brief instruction from Lizzie and Tyler, Jordan rode behind them through the Daniel’s land and into a brisk trot through fields as the sun began to rise over the horizon causing the fog to be subdued by its presence. Birds sang songs all around them as the quietness slowly began to be filled with the songs of nature. She wasn’t used to this. Growing up in a metropolitan area had always been the norm with its cars and people and noises. Granted, it wasn’t like her family lived in a huge city, but it wasn’t like this.

Soon, they came to a beautiful river flowing through the field they were in. Tyler and Lizzie slid gracefully off their horses, while Jordan made her best attempt to not fall.

“So, Lizzie told us how crazy things were these days for you and your family,” Tyler said.

“And with the whole Mallory thing, too.”

“Yeah?” Lizzie nodded.

“So, I had this cool thought that maybe you’d want to just have a Psalm 23 moment right here.” She pulled out a small Bible from her back pocket and sat down on the grass. Jordan sat down too into the dew-laced green carpet beneath her, not minding the cool damp feeling of the ground.

“The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul…”

Jordan listened as Lizzie read and let the words sink in. Her soul felt like it needed restoring. It had been easy to feel overwhelmed by what had been happening, but at the moment, she felt like she could put all of that away. Tyler stood with the horses listening as Lizzie just kept reading Psalm after Psalm. Time seemed to almost stand still.

It was a very simple gesture, but a good reminder. Sometimes, God just wanted to lead her beside still waters and in green pastures to remind her that the Shepherd still watched over His sheep. It took getting away from the craziness around her to do that. Maybe everything wouldn’t be fixed when she got back to Willards or home, but her Shepherd hadn’t change at all either. Jordan eased her head back and lay on the cool grass and just let it be. Green pastures around her, still waters near her, and the Shepherd still watching over.

This book is beautifully written in a manner that relates to Christianity and the purpose of life. A good guidance to religion and faith. Changed my view totally about god's love. ~ Review by charice

Guest article by Pamela Santiago

Journey of A Thousand Miles is about Thomas’ life journey during the death of Sarah and his baby Abigail. It will challenge our view of the purpose of our life on earth, people who haven’t grow in true grace and unprepared for the greatest things from God.

Life is like a thick door in one’s path, a door that recedes before us as we advance. No one will ever know what is beyond that door. We can only know step by step by opening one door at a time. We never know what the future holds. We can never know what events a single day may bring in our life.

These events sometimes fill us with happiness and success and sometimes beyond that door we may find unexpected and undesired events. All of us go through each door in our life and anxious to open the next one.

In our entire life, every day we take a step and continue to walk. Many of us don’t realize that in each door that we open God is standing there to walk with us but sadly very often we walk pass by him and pretend not to notice him.

So don’t despise the little steps you know you can take every day. There are tiny miracles in each and every one of them.

Excerpt Chapter 1. Becoming a Life-Giving Mom

“Get my baby out!” I screamed with a raspy voice. My desperate pleas for help were barely heard. Smoke filled the room as the cries of my newborn awakened me into a living nightmare. The house was on fire, and I couldn’t get out.

As a young girl, my mind would wonder, “What would I do if my house caught on fire?” Then I would create a very clear, levelheaded plan. However, smoke inhalation disorients your brain.

The sounds of my precious five-week-old daughter’s wails pierced my sleep. Walking to her bedroom in the dark, half-asleep, to feed her every night had never been a problem. Now, suddenly I was lost and couldn’t find her doorway.

I clawed at the clothes in my closet trying to find my way out. Then, stumbling in the other direction, I felt the windowpane. It wasn’t until I opened the window and looked out that I realized my house was on fire. I tried to scream for help, but no one could hear my cries.

I collapsed. In desperation I prayed the prayer everyone prays when they think they are about to die—“Help!” My daughter and I would have died that night if my husband hadn’t gotten home in time. Imagine his horror when he rounded the corner and could see the sky lit up by orange flames.

Cars and people filled our street, watching in horror. The home next to us, which was under construction, had already burned to the ground. A home on the other side stood engulfed in a raging inferno. The family of four stood huddled together, watching all of their belongings turn to ash.

There was only one fire truck on the scene. The other fire trucks sat motionless, waiting for a passing train. My husband grabbed the arm of the fireman. Frantically he asked, “Did you get my wife and baby out?” The fireman dropped the hose and together they ran to the front door. The neighbors had assumed we were still on vacation. They didn’t realize we were trapped inside.

When I heard someone coming into our home, I began to scream hysterically, “Get my baby out!” I don’t remember what the fireman who saved my life looked like that night. I just remember him holding his flashlight up and saying, “Come toward the light.” I made my way toward what looked like a tiny pin-light in the smothering darkness. At last, I felt his arms as he led me out to safety.

Every Mom Needs Help

You may not have woken up to your house in flames and your child in danger, but you have needs. If you are transparent you don’t have it all together. Your life is not perfect. There may be some wonderful aspects to your life right now, but there are other areas that are just plain tough.

It’s when we come to the end of ourselves that we find God. He is the source of our life. He is the maker of heaven and earth. He created you in His image. He gave you life, breath, and purpose.

If you are trying to walk through life as a mom without the help of God you will be lonely, depressed, and overwhelmed. But if you are ready to find help, He is waiting to help you. He is ready to pour His life-giving, life-altering, life-changing power into you.

Think about the last time you were on a plane. Most likely you heard the flight attendant give instructions to parents with small children. “In case of emergency, put your oxygen mask on first before helping your child put on their oxygen mask.” This instruction is not only helpful when on a plane, but also in life.

Every Life-Giving Mom needs to be connected to the ultimate Life-Giver. Every day you must put on your oxygen mask first before you help your children. Sure, you can pretend to have enough leftover oxygen from the day before, but you can’t be a Life-Giving Mom in your own strength. Like the air that we breathe to sustain life, oxygen is a symbol for the continual supply of the breath and life of the Holy Spirit.

The Morning After the Fire

We spent a long, weary night in the hospital as the doctors examined and treated my baby and me for smoke inhalation. In the early hours of the morning we called my mom.

“Mom, we’re all right.” The long pause of silence was deafening.

Finally she spoke: “What happened?”

Wayne described the huge fire and how there was only one fire truck, leaving three homes devastated. The heat from the blazing inferno melted a car bumper and the shutters of our neighbors’ home. People lined the street as the fire lit up the night sky. As we told Mom about the fire, her quiet peace engulfed our stress.

“You’re the ones I have been praying for,” she said. The month before my mom began to meditate, fast, and pray over Isaiah 43:

When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
(Isaiah 43:2, NIV)

Later I would look back on this telephone conversation and marvel at the power of prayer and the peace of my own mother. I would rejoice in how God saved us from the fire. I would celebrate—just like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego—that God was with me in the fire. I would wonder at how the bondages of my life were burned up and I was set free. (See Daniel 3).

However, my present reality was far from tranquil. My whole life-system was on overload. I had no home...no baby furniture...no diapers…no clothes...

As we walked into the shell of our home trying to salvage things, my emotions were more charred than the black soot that blanketed every surface. The neighbors rallied and helped with our physical needs, but I was a mess. For the first two weeks, before the insurance company paid for an apartment, we stayed at a neighbor’s house. They graciously opened their home to us while they were on vacation. It was then that Rachel at six-weeks-old began to scream uncontrollably for hours at a time.
She had colic.

One day, I laid Rachel down on the blanket and slowly backed away. Her screaming drove me to the edge of feeling like I couldn’t cope. I began to feel claustrophobic and trapped. My heart raced as my mind shut down. “I’m losing it,” I thought. “If I don’t get out of the house, I don’t know what I will do.” I went to the kitchen and dialed the number of a neighbor.

“Can you take my baby?” I quietly pleaded, as soon as she answered the phone. “I have to get out of here.”

Hearing the tremor in my voice the neighbor agreed to help me. No doubt, she saw my glazed look as I handed her my infant and drove off. What would have happened if she hadn’t been there for me? I don’t know. I was truly desperate.

Life-Giving Moms are Open to Change

Desperation is a driving force in our lives to seek change. It is during the pressure-cooker seasons in our lives when we find out our areas of weakness and vulnerability. Pressure-cookers are known for being hot, dangerous, and able to blow their lid. That house fire revealed the hidden habits of my own heart that needed God’s healing touch. It’s the heat of life that shows the hidden fractures of our hearts.

A Life-Giving Mom uses the pressure-cooker seasons to reevaluate. Allow your own areas of need to propel you toward getting help. As you learn new skills, you will become a better person as well as a better mom. If you have picked up this book for the first time, you will be drawn to areas you need to overcome in your own life. If you are reading this book for the second time, your season has changed and now you have another area of need.

A Life-Giving Mom is a life-long learner. Approach this journey with an open heart rather than a smug brain. Jesus said He came for the sick. It was the religious who thought they were holier than Jesus and crucified Him. They murdered the one who came to bring them life (See Matthew 27). As you begin this journey, turn off your religious notions about who you should or shouldn’t be. Rather, come as you are. Shine the flashlight of God’s Word into the closets of your life and look freshly at replacing the old broken habits with brand-new life-strategies.

A Life-Giving Mom replaces life-destroying habits with life-sustaining actions. You have the power of choice. The choices you make today will determine your destiny tomorrow. You have before you choices that bring life and choices that bring death (See Deuteronomy 30:19). Choose life.

Why do they leave Christianity and come to Islam?

Aicha Zoubair

Guest Post by Aicha Zoubair

This book: "WHY DO THEY LEAVE CHRISTIANITY AND COME TO ISLAM?" emphasizes the importance for mankind of knowing that God has sent a last scripture to follow: the Quran. It explains the message of everyone being responsible for their own life and that proper worship to the real God is the only way to lead people to heaven.

Was Christianity the religion of Jesus? Did he call himself a Christian? The author explores these questions and many more and condemns Paul as the messenger of Satan who managed to pollute the message of Christ.

Zoubair clarifies that Christianity was not the religion Jesus followed and that it is not the religion God is pleased with, because it has been manipulated by the Roman Church with the decision to worship Jesus and leave the law for salvation on the blooded cross.

If you are ready to learn why Islam is the religion of truth that God wants us to follow, or if you are currently interested in learning how Islam is different from what you learn and see on television, you must read this book.

Review by yoo-cht

This is a good piece of critical analysis that compares verses from the Quran to the correlating stories in the Bible in order to form an argument. This is a fascinating read and I couldn't put the book down, it didn't just keep me wanting to know more but it kept me asking ‘why’.

I felt as though this book answered some of the questions that I did have about some of the stories contained in the bible.

You can tell that this book is written from the heart and with a devout faith and for me as a Christian it was an insightful read.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to delve into religion further, Christianity or Islam or who would like to know the differences between today's Bible and the Quran.

A very good read, I'm glad I bought it.

Review by E. Lucas -  Bold, Well-Written Fantasy Shocks and Entertains (click on link to see complete review )
"...is the first in a fantasy series that may prove controversial but is nonetheless entertaining and very well written. It begins at the beginning of mankind, when the Angels freely interacted with humans, either choosing to help them or wreak havoc—and then God makes a decree: the Angels are to step back and cease all interference..."
Since I love controversial topics, especially when it comes to religion, I knew this book was a "must read" for me. It is very well written and I am enjoying it. And...I must say the book cover is fantastic. Read book description below:

John Patrick Kennedy was born in Brooklyn, New York, to immigrant parents. His first novel "Bugs Ain't So Bad," was written when he was only four years old--unfortunately, it was never published, and even more unfortunately--the original manuscript has since, been lost forever.

Now recovered from the loss of his first novel, John has finally decided to get his butt in gear and share his work with people other than his wife, mother, and mother-in-law. He's been writing all his life, and now realizes that it would be fulfilling to receive any kind of feedback--good, bad, or even something in between. Anything really.
