The monk took a breath and gazed into the eyes of the detective. His steady nature and even face gave nothing away. “To ignore death is to live your life without ever looking forward and to ignore the preciousness of the moment,” Tenzin remarked. “. Death does not offend me, and violence does not surprise me. A man is dead, and there is nothing to be done but to learn from this event.”

“Did you learn something?” Grant wondered aloud.

“It was a clear and stark reminder that no one is guaranteed the amount of life they wish,” he answered, peering over the detective’s shoulder at the crime scene. “However, it was also a reminder that the impact you make today may be the last one you make.”

Grant tapped his pen on the pad, unsure of what to write. “We have your number,” he finally decided.

Hell to Pay

Book Description:

Marlow Heatherton, degenerate gambler, is in deep to the Russian mafia. When he skips town, it sets off a chain of events that will cause chaos and bloodshed from Westchester County to Brighton Beach, from Asbury Park to Bushwick, from Atlantic City to a rest stop on the New Jersey turnpike.

Along the way, police, bounty hunters, and criminals of all stripes will be pulled into the vortex.

Who will come out on top? Who will walk away from the carnage at all?

Excerpt from Chapter One:    (Kindle Locations 5-19).

“I remember my ex-wife asked me about it one time,” Marlow said. “You know, the reason why I do it? I’d never really thought about it before, and I had a hard time explaining it. I think what most people believe is like you get a kind of adrenaline rush when you win, and you do. But there’s more to it than that. It’s like… if what you predict is going to happen, happens the way you thought it would, you feel… justified. You know what I mean?”

“Sure,” Janet said. “I think so.”

“I mean, a guy like me, I never been to college, right, well, okay, about six months at some rinky-dink place you never heard of, but if you’re able to make a living gambling, you feel pretty smart. It’s like, you study the matchups, and you see the way teams are trending, and you take into account all the factors, and you make an educated guess, the best you can. And if you’re right more times than you’re wrong, and especially if you’re able to support yourself and your family through it, it really gives you a sense of pride. You know?”

“Yeah.” “The money you can make off it in a week, what other job you know of you can make the green that easy, doctor, I guess, lawyer? You see me being a doctor, huh?” They both had a good laugh about that one. No, Janet sure as hell couldn’t see him being a doctor, but he was laughing too, so it was okay. “But Cecelia, she never understood the business aspect of it like I did. She’d look at it like it was all fun and games.”

Brilliant!  Such a good story! Vivid scenery, well written! I tried to look for other books by the author but couldn't find any? ~ Review by AdamF

Here is where I add in my two cents… Absolutely check out Rafael H. Derchansky’s website. Looks like this is the debut novel by this artist. I say “artist” because of his beautiful paintings. Mind you, writing is an art form too. Answer to AdamF - Follow this author on Amazon to be notified of their next release. Click the follow button below his photo on Rafael H. Derchansky’s page OR follow on Goodreads

Rafael-H-Derchansky

Derchansky’s biography is fascinating. An excerpt from Amazon.com “…born in a small village in Siberia in 1954, 14 years after Stalin forcefully deported his parents from Lithuania. In 1960, he and his family moved to the city Tomsk, one of the oldest towns in Siberia. In 1970, he finished high school and enrolled in Tomsk Polytechnic University. In 1973, the USSR temporarily lifted the Iron Curtain to allow some of its citizens to leave the country. Rafael and his family used this opportunity to immigrate to Israel.”

From Author’s Interview from writersinterview.com

What inspired you to write a story about an art forgery expert who must confront the ghosts of her family’s past? For many years I was brooding with the idea of writing a book about a family that was torn apart. I imagined a scenario where a sister and brother would pass each other on the street and not recognize each other while at the same time actually searching for each other. The idea came from some personal experience in my early life in Siberia.

*****
Rafael’s personal background described above in his brief biography most assuredly informs this radiant novel. The story is complex but never confusing, involving mysteries that do not go unresolved, feelings that find their goal. ~ Grady Harp HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE

Excerpt from Book Description:

With new revelations, her life quickly spirals into a maelstrom of confusion and Dina is torn between her innocent desire to believe the stranger and her professional instincts telling her that everything is not as it seems. As she struggles to understand what is happening, an unsolved, decades-old crime linked to a missing treasure becomes the center of her life.

Embarking on an unexpected and mystifying adventure that interrupts her busy life, Dina must confront the shadows of her past and face the truth about her family. What happened more than twenty years ago when her father and brother were torn away from her?

Regarding an old long-forgotten Siberian mental art…...

Except of review by Jordan: The best way that I can attempt to describe Kerzhak Navigation is as a mental art that trains both the mind and body to focus on details, and it is through this exercise that one is able to train their minds to recognize and memorize maps and locations. This exercise eventually becomes an extremely useful and critical part of the story. I feel it is also important to add the organization of Corridor One creates an entirely new air of mystery and intrigue; who doesn't love reading about rather secret, unknown organizations? I'll leave it at that, as I don't want to give away too much.

Excerpt from Chapter 1

HE moved quickly through the hallways of his prison, walking so fast he was practically running. It was an ordinary day. The halls were crowded with awkward teenagers— the boys slurring their usual chest -thumping machismo, the girls, gravitating towards the finest faker in the crowd. For just one time, he didn’t want to be noticed. Just once. That smell peculiar to high schools— a mix of raging pheromones and the foul tang of pubescent body odor—wafted through the confined space. They all had ten minutes before second period began. The bell rang three minutes ago. Seven minutes left. The schmoozing started instantly. Instantly, that is, for the alphas and the omegas of the school corridors : the overlords of all creation at Wellington Secondary School.

He was not one of them. He was an untouchable in the high school caste system. A good day meant invisibility and those days were few and far between. So far, it had been a good day but it wasn’t even lunch hour yet. That was usually when things happened. For now, he just wanted to make it from math class to biology with his head down.

He made a hurried stop at his locker, his fingers frantically fumbling for the combination. After three tries, the lock mercifully opened. He exchanged books, stuffed them into his backpack and rushed to his next class. All around him, conversations raged. He sometimes wondered if he was the only member of his generation who could hear. Everyone else his age seemed to yell everything they said, even to people standing right next to them.

Just don’t let them see me.

The two-minute warning bell finally rang out through the school. The students slowly began shuffling off to their next class. So far, so good. Nobody had noticed him. Despite that, he was still tortured. His proactive tormentors were nowhere to be seen but the passive antagonism of his scantily clad female school chums was relentless.

Their low-cut, skin-tight tops and extremely short skirts showed off the firm curves of young feminine beauty. Beneath his beta male stoicism, hormones raged just as fervently as those of the most masculine jocks in the school. They had a shot at getting in those short skirts. Not him. The girls were usually nice enough to him but their genuine adoration went to the very people he hoped were blind to his presence.

At last, he arrived at biology unscathed and unnoticed.

The Anonymous Girl

the_anonymous_girl

The Anonymous Girl by Holy Ghost Writer is Count of Monte Cristo Book 7 in the Series. So for those of you out there who love a series – Take a good look at this one! Rave Reviews!

Review by Chameleon ~ On the Edge

The Anonymous Girl is an incredible book by a very talented author. This is my second read from the mysterious Holy Ghost Writer. Our protagonist Zaydee is super talented at what she does. You adore her not only for that but by her confidence and strong will. I was on edge right from the beginning because you are immediately drawn into the kind of high-stakes events that go on throughout the course of the book. There were lots of interesting themes and grand ideas that begin subtle but reveal themselves more and more.

The Anonymous Girl balanced reality with more cryptic and surreal elements quite well. I thoroughly enjoyed this read. Whoever you are, this book will exceed your expectations because it really can't be categorized.

Excerpt from Chapter 1 ~ SEEK AND DESTROY

Kindle Edition – (pp. 1-2).

Zaydee shot out of bed in a panic, tears creeping through her dark lashes and easing under her eyelids. She pressed the palms of her hands into her eyes, heaving thick breaths into the air as she composed herself.

Vivid recollection of the disturbing events in her dream sent Zaydee’s mind into a tailspin. She thumbed through each moment and each scene as she would pictures on a computer, pixels of dream landscapes overlapping one another as she fast-forwarded past insignificant segments and paused on critical nuances.

She heard the blast from the judge’s gavel as the vibration from it shot through her like lightning, the sound repeating itself until she covered her ears in an unsuccessful attempt to make it cease.

Life in prison: those words penetrated Zaydee like an unsharpened knife, the dull blade of each syllable snagging on her freedom . Reruns of escape and recapture played in her mind alongside a picture-in-picture of failed attempts to overturn her conviction. She looped her memory reel, pausing , rewinding, and viewing her mistakes with a metaphorical microscope, noting those elements that required adjustment.

Giving in to the realization that sleep wasn’t going to come again soon, she flipped on her small bedside lamp and noted to herself that the events that took place in the dream were simple play-by-plays of unfathomable circumstances. These would not become her reality. Her fox-like intelligence and keen intuition would protect her from making any missteps that would lead to life in prison . That she had let her guard down enough to land in FDC in the first place was simply divine intervention propelling Zaydee to think outside of her usual paradigm, to see the world from another perspective, to find herself outside of the spiritual and emotional island she had created for herself, she decided. Now she was more focused , more aware, and less likely to fall prey to foolish mistakes.

Excellent Surreal Modern Thriller ~ Zaydee is is the kind of girl you just can't help but fall in love with, her character is excellently written and developed. The themes in the book deal with many issues which are troubling the world today and are expertly explored and expanded throughout the course of the novel. This book perfectly mixes serious issues with entertaining stories in real life settings turned surreal. ~ Review by Jacqueline

Bill is a good guy in tough world and you will see how the violence begins to alter his mind set.

A short conversation or argument is generally the precursor to a fight, although sometimes your adversary can just start swinging after very little or sometimes no verbal sparring. There are some real nutters out there.” Bill Carson.

So if you are ready grab your baseball bat, pull on your body armour, bite down on your gum shield and follow Bill on his journey and enter the shady, dangerous realm of nightclub bouncers. This book is preordained to be a cult classic, this is a must read, quite simply a bouncer’s bible.

Review about Author Bill Carson by M. L. Carter on Amazon:
I've found a number of good authors through twitter and Bill Carson is one of them. Carson teased us for weeks with lines from his book. These short, powerful descriptive phrases on Twitter made his book, Necessary Evils, a must add to my WTR (waiting to read) book list.
It was a good read. I think the well-written emotional reactions of the protagonist were quite realistic. There was enough action and thought-proving situations to keep me reading well into the night.

Sylvie's Story: A Timothy O'Mahony Novella

Sylvie's Story

Sylvie's Story is an adult thriller for a mature audience.

A short summary to introduce the story - A Timothy O'Mahony novella which details a story of a woman on the run from a dictator in the Congo. Sylvie sells herself to men under a false name to earn enough money to get herself, her mother and sisters out of the Congo. Her luck seems to change when  a wealthy Frenchman offers to take her to France to work there as an escort. All seems to be going well and when Sylvie meets a man who used to know her father, she thinks he will help her.

What has my curiosity brewing here, besides wanting to know if this man will help her is this novella can also be read in conjunction with another of the Timothy O'Mahony novels. It can be read either before, after or during the reading of Green Blood is for France.

greenbloodisforfrance

Excerpt of review by M. Ferguson about 'Green Blood is For France'  - Absolutely super read - "I could read and reread this book. It is a gripping crime novel set in the politics of modern-day France - with the personalities of the last few years thinly disguised. The author clearly knows France well. The book ranges from the west coast of Ireland to West Africa, but is mainly centered in high circles in Paris (all totally convincing)."

Now this may seem off in a way to show a beer commercial here but it is to give you a feel for what the Congo is like with these "Sapeurs" - The Society of Cool and Elegant People.

Excerpt from Sylvie's Story (Kindle Locations 8 - 9 )

With a motion of her head towards the main door, she reminded him of the presence of the muscular , shaven-headed bouncers, members of the male haute-couture cult of the cloth known in the Congo by its French initials SAPE, which stood for The Society of Cool and Elegant People. They were known as ‘Sapeurs’. They stood near the bar, looking nonchalantly into the wall-length mirrors around the room in which they could keep track of every woman’s and client’s movements in the club.

The Sapeurs ’ whole lives were devoted to finding the money to purchase designer shirts, ties, shoes, tuxedos or any other type of leather or cloth apparel showcased in the chic streets of Paris near the Church of the Madeleine, whatever the expense. They wore Weston lizard-skin shoes, Francesco Smalto suits, Yves Saint Laurent blazers and Christian Dior dress shirts. Their scents came from Jean Paul Gaultier or Lolita Lempicka. Officially, there might be only a couple of dollars a day coming into their hands, but the clothes on their backs were worth several thousand. To be leaders in fashion was their religion. A bad dresser had no more human value to them than one of the dead bodies the Dictator had left to rot after the massacre at the Beach landing.

Sylvie's Story is available on Amazon.
