Inside The Mirrors

Inside the Mirrors
“This story crawls into your head, and makes you leave the light on after you're done reading.” ~ Trixie

Inside The Mirrors by Jason R. Davis

Unfortunately there is nothing normal about Standard. There has been an evil that has been awakened, and now the residents are slowly going crazy. Men for no reason are coming home and murdering their families, and dark forms are appearing in people's mirrors. The evil is spreading, and now it is up to ex-Chicago cop Rob Alletto to find it.

*****

If you could sum up Inside the Mirrors in three words, what would they be?

Inside The Mirrors by Jason R. Davis is like a classic horror: scary without excessive gore. This story crawls into your head, and makes you leave the light on after you're done reading. The plot centers on Rob Alleto, a Chicago cop who believes that moving to a small town would lead to a safer environment for himself and his family. Before long, he discovers that there are things far worse than street criminals, when an evil spirit attempts to possess Rob's neighbors through their mirrors. It kept my interest from beginning to end. ~ Trixie

Hatched
Hatched by Jason R. Davis

It is the morning hours in the small town of Hammond and, as the town wakes up it finds that there is something spreading. Something that is not seen until it is too late because by then, you are already infected. At that point, they are already... Hatched.

*****

Hatched is a good story, with a lot of really good ideas and concepts. The idea of the spiders and the "zombies" was definitely a twist on the idea, and I think I can say that of all the zombie variants I've encountered in fiction, these are the ones I'd less like to encounter...

"For Mr. Davis I have to say one thing – yes, I’m now afraid of spiders again! A genuine horror writer that knows just how to terrify his readers and create nightmares that will NEVER end!' ~ Audiobook Reviewer

Caught in the Web: Invisible Spiders Book 2 by Jason R. Davis

In the morning, the invisible spiders had hatched and had spread. Now the small town of Hammond is under quarantine and the inhabitants are fighting to survive. They face something they can't see, and no one, not even the military has answers. They just know they must escape before it's too late. They must stop themselves from being caught in the web.

*****

"This is the second book in the series and immediately starts where the first book left. The already tense nature of the book only increases by leaps and bounds as the pace quickens and havoc is wreaked upon this small rural town. There were multiple times that the book left me agape, as the mental imagery from the action was magnetic. "~ Zoe

Excerpt ~ INTRO

The beautiful Beaumont House apartment complex was an old, well-maintained group of Tudor buildings on a large stretch of land. It was a sprawling apartment complex with jewel-colored, freshly-cut grass. There were old, tall shady trees interspersed within the landscape, making it look like a picture postcard.

Seasonal flowers were always planted in circles around the trees, in the pathways and around the perimeter of each of the Tudor buildings adding a touch of delicate color, like lace on a beautiful dress.

The grounds had small hills which looked beautiful all year round. In the winter the children would sled down them, screaming and laughing. The apartments themselves were well cared for inside and out, from top to bottom. Despite its age the apartment complex looked brand new. The Beaumont House was located in a sleepy suburb thirty-five minutes from the city. It was it an ideal place to live for those who worked in the city.

The first smaller building was the rental office. This was where people inquired about rentals or apartments to purchase. There was often a waiting list as the apartment complex was not only pleasing to the eye, but was one of the few pet-friendly apartments in the area.

There was an elderly gentleman who had worked in the rental office for many decades. There wasn’t a tenant who could recall a time when he was not there. He could remember the names and faces of the many people and families who had lived there throughout the decades as well as details about their lives. The old man was extremely thin and pale with a strange twinkle in his eye. What little white hair he had left was standing up in every direction. His suit was sharp and well-pressed but seemed to be from another century. The office had wall to wall bookshelves filled with mostly very old leather-bound books. The old man would often read, sit at his desk and look at his old-fashioned pocket watch.

Sometimes he looked out of the windows to watch the goings-on. People moving in or out, dogs being walked, children playing, residents sitting on their porches, driving to work, walking along the scenic paths and sitting under the large shady trees. The birds were singing, the neighbors were friendly and the lawns were always well-manicured. It was a very nice place to live. An ideal place, or so they thought.

Children of the Undead

Children Undead

UK USA CDN AU

Not a frequent reader of zombie novels, I didn't expect to read Children of the Undead immediately after I bought it on the recommendation of a friend. But checking to be sure that the book had downloaded to my Kindle, I had read the first chapter before I paused. It's that kind of book. You just keep reading. Children of the Undead is engrossing--for its fast-moving story, for its wit and humor, for its sometimes biting political and social commentary, for its general intelligence. I highly recommend it. ~ Review by George Eliot

Guest article by David Dvorkin

This isn't your run-of-the-mill zombie apocalypse. The dead are digging their way out of their graves, but they aren't after brains, at least not primarily. Above all, they want their homes and jobs back. Not that they would object to the occasional nice serving of brains, especially if it comes with a side of pickles.

When Jerry Morgenstern and his sister Lily go to Florida to clear out their dead parents’ condominium, they expect it to be an unpleasant task. They have no idea how unpleasant it will turn out to be. The unpleasantness begins when their dead parents show up and tell them to clear out. The hungry looks the rotting zombies keep casting at their children’s heads don’t help matters. Nor do the numerous old zombies suddenly roaming the sidewalks.

Back home after that trip, Jerry discovers that the dead founder of the pickle manufacturer where he works has also returned and reclaimed his place. That, however, causes less disruption than you might expect. Having a murderous zombie CEO in charge is not all that different from business as usual.

Only later will Jerry learn the dreadful secret behind the extraordinary popularity of the pickles sold by his employer and how those pickles are involved in the epidemic of zombies suddenly infesting America. He will learn about a lot of other things, too, that he really didn’t want to know anything about, such as zombie bacteria and giant tentacles emerging from under the earth.

When the girl of his dreams reacts to a tragedy by throwing herself into his arms, he learns something else: that dreams can turn suddenly and unexpectedly into nightmares.

Children of the Undead is a tale of parents, children, brothers, sisters, friends, bosses, employees, wives, ex–wives, friends’ wives, politicians, studly bacteria, zombies, tentacles, politics, religion, giant screaming earth mothers, and the armpit and other regions of Hell.

And pickles.

Excerpt  from CHAPTER ONE

Lily Morgenstern Flicker groaned. “Christ, look at this place.”

“The sooner we start,” Jerry Morgenstern said, “the sooner we can put it on the market. You take the bedroom closet. I’ll take the hall closet.”

“You’re taking the easy one.”

Jerry sighed. “Let’s not argue, now that it’s finally over. Okay, we’ll switch. I’ll take the bedroom.”

“Wait a minute. That’s where all the valuable stuff is. Maybe I should take the bedroom, after all.”

“Jesus Christ.”

Jerry was about to say more when he realized that his sister was looking with horror at something behind him. Her face was pale, her mouth was open, and her eyes were wide.

He spun around and found himself facing his father. Jerry’s expression began to resemble his sister’s.

The old man was dressed in the suit he had been wearing when the coffin lid was closed on him. The undertaker’s caked–on makeup still covered his face, but it was cracking and falling off in pieces. Or maybe it was his skin that was falling off. Jerry couldn’t tell for sure.

“Still bickering,” his father said. “You kids will never stop. What are you doing in my condo?”

“Who are you?” Lily asked.

“I’ve been dead for a week, and already you’ve forgotten me? I’m not surprised. I told your mother it would be that way.”

“But you’re dead,” Jerry said. “You can’t be Dad.”

“I was dead. Didn’t like it. Told them I was going home.”

“You can do that?” Jerry asked. “When you’re dead?”

“You think I was going to let them tell me what to do? What are you doing in my condo?” he repeated.

Ignoring him, Jerry said to Lily, “It’s some sort of scam. This guy’s pretending to be Dad so he can get hold of the condo and sell it.”

“Sell it?” the older man said. “Of course not. We’re going to live in it, just like always.”

Lily looked around the place, her nose wrinkling. “You call this living?”

“We?” Jerry said.

“I had to walk all the way from the cemetery,” his father said. “In my condition. Why didn’t you leave my car there?”

“We didn’t think you’d ever need it again,” Lily said. “We, um, we got rid of it.”

“You sold it? I bet you didn’t get enough for it. You always let people take advantage of you. Where’s the money?”

“We gave it away,” Jerry said. “To a charity. It was for a good cause.”

“You mean someone told you it was for a good cause, and you believed them,” his father said. He shook his head from side to side. His neck creaked and cracked, and small bits of leathery tissue floated down.

Jerry was afraid the head would fall off. He was torn between an urge to leap forward and hold the head in place and an urge to run like hell.

“You were always so naïve,” his father said. “Such a good brain, but so naïve. Brain,” he repeated. “I’m hungry.” He turned away and opened the door of the refrigerator. The refrigerator was empty. “Where are the pickled peppers?”

“Pickles?” Lily said.

“Piper’s Pickled Peppers. We always keep a jar or two in here. I love them.” He turned back toward Jerry and glared at him accusingly. “Did you eat them? Just because you work there doesn’t give you the right to eat up all the Piper’s Pickled Peppers.”

“I didn’t touch the damned things.”

“Watch your language when you’re in my house!” Jerry’s father stepped forward threateningly.

Jerry stepped back. “After you, er, after you left, there was a lot of old food in there. We had to get rid of it.”

“You threw away the Piper’s Pickled Peppers?” his father roared. “What’s wrong with you?”

“I’ll get you some more, okay? Never mind that right now. You said we’re going to live here. Who’s we?”

The front door opened and a woman walked in.

She looked like their mother but less so than the old man looked like their father. He looked like a dead man fresh from the coffin. She looked like a dead woman who was very unfresh. Bone showed through here and there on her face, and the dress she had been buried in hung limply on her in a way that made Jerry suspect that she was mostly bone underneath it. If this was a scam, the makeup was remarkable.

“I’m exhausted,” she said. “That was a long walk.” She noticed the brother and sister, and her face contorted stiffly into what could have been an expression of pleasure.

“Lily!” she said. “Jerry! It’s so wonderful to see you children again!”

Before Jerry could react, she had stepped forward and embraced him.

He responded automatically by putting his arms around her. On one side of her back, he could feel her ribs and the spaces between them. The other side felt normal. Up close, the smell of decay was staggering.

He managed to escape and to step away from her. “It’s not a scam,” he said to Lily. “They’re real.”

“Oh, Jesus. It’s not possible!”

“I read that there’s more solar flux in Florida because of global warming.”

“What’s solar flux?”

“Something to do with the sun. Maybe it energized them.”

His father stared at Jerry’s forehead. “You always were the one with the brains.” He tore his eyes away. “I don’t know how long you kids were planning to stay. Lily, you can have the guest bedroom. Jerry, you’ll sleep on the couch. You’ll have to find your own food. Except for those pickled peppers, your mother and I don’t eat in the old way anymore.” His gaze drifted back to Jerry’s forehead.

Interview with Marcus Lambert, Author of Ralph Pincus, Occultist Extraordinaire

Get Ralph Pincus, Occultist Extraordinaire on Amazon! (This book is for a  mature audience)

Synopsis: Christians, you have a new savior.

Don't worry. This one's Jewish too.

And his name is Ralph Pincus.

Ralph joins forces with an evangelical sorcerer and a vampire in order to save the world. The reluctant trio must learn the truth before time runs out: Why does destiny's invitation sound like the garbled death rattle of a child murderer? What is the secret shame of all good vampires? What is a viable online revenue stream for zombie exploitation? Why are all the sorrows of the world contained in the single tear of a gay unicorn?

~*~

With us today is the satirist himself, Marcus Lambert. He’s a hilarious guy with an awesome new book out for anyone who likes to laugh. RALPH PINCUS, OCCULTIST EXTRORDINARE has been described as a “fun adventure about the modern man that doesn’t seem to meet the general standard set by society” and is considered to contain “borderline brilliant, vulgar humor.”

What inspired the character of Ralph Pincus? Do you see any of yourself in Ralph?

My approach to writing characters is to start with an aspect of myself I don’t like and then run with it. I see myself as a combination of both Ralph and Gabe, another character in the book: Ralph the hapless man and Gabe the self-destructive man who is a legend in his own mind.

How do you write effective satire? Do you feel that it’s a gift that you’ve been blessed with? I’m a hypercritical smartass. Anyone I’ve ever been in a relationship with doesn’t consider that particular character trait a blessing, but it does come in handy when writing satire.

What do you hope that readers will take away from RALPH PINCUS, OCCULTIST EXTRORDINARE? I like that each reader takes away something a little different than any other reader of the book. I just hope they don’t think I’m a sex offender.

What are your thoughts on self-publishing with Amazon?

I think the ease and accessibility of self-publishing through Amazon is great. My sensibilities are topping out at niche, so there was never a point in the history of books where I would have stood a chance being published in any traditional way. The downside to all that ease and accessibility means there’s a lot more crap for potential readers to sort through.

Do you believe that serialization is the way to go?

For anyone like me, a self-published author nobody has heard of, serialization probably isn’t the way to go. I planted a nebulous idea in my head which convinced me readers would be more likely to take a chance with a shorter work from an unknown author. I don’t know if it’s a viable option for others. I’m still thoroughly entrenched in my status as an unknown author.

You’re a writer, an excellent, hilarious one. Do you have another job in addition to this one?

My writing is a long way off from paying the bills. I went to a liberal arts college, so I work in construction. Residential remodel.

Burn the Dead

BurnTheDead_new

BURN THE DEAD. The brand new zombie horror from author Steven Jenkins. Published by Black Bed Sheet Books.

Guest Post by Steven Jenkins

Robert Stephenson makes his living cremating zombies—a job that pays the bills and plays tricks on the mind. Still, his life is routine until one day his infected wife, Anna, shows up in line for the incinerator, and Rob must cremate the love of his life.

In a race against the clock, he must find his four-year-old son Sammy, who is stuck in a newly quarantined zone teeming with flesh-eaters, and crawling with the Necro-Morbus virus.

Does Rob have what it takes to fight the undead and put his broken family back together?

Or will he end up in his own incinerator, burning with the rest of the dead?

Review by Chloe H ~ Not your average zombie fare
Burn The Dead is not your average zombie fare (which I'd imagine would technically be brains). Most books with undead themes are pretty horrendous or, at best, generic. This book is neither of those things.
Humorous, tongue-in-cheek commentary, endearing characters, natural dialogue, and a compelling plot. Really, what else do you need?
In this story, what pushes it over the edge isn't anything necrotic or the cute use of phrases like "dead or old fashioned dead?" It's Sammy. Sammy ups the ante, adds sympathy and brings heartbreak to the story.

Burn the Dead is available on Amazon (Kindle and Paperback)

Are the zombies really gone? What is the Alliance hiding? What part does Jenna play in her father’s research?

Set in the near future, After focuses on what life would be like in the aftermath of a zombie virus and how a corrupt government would take advantage.

Written from the viewpoints of seventeen year old Jenna and her father’s ex lab assistant Wesley, we learn how her father is involved with the virus and the secrets he is hiding that caused him to fake his own death.

This was a great read, the zombies weren't overused and you really cared about Jenna's plight. There were a few twists along the way (I won’t spoil it for anyone) and it left me wanting more. Highly recommended. Review by Kat Gracey.

After is written as a young adult book, but is enjoyable for adults too. It is the first book in a series of three.

Available to buy through Amazon in both Kindle and paperback format now. The sequel Before is out soon, published by J Ellington Ashton Press.

Manners Cost Everything

Manners_Kindle

Manners Cost Everything is a thriller/horror for adult audiences.

Review by R. Cooper ~ A brilliant debut from Mr Chambers

What a stonker of a read! It had me gripped from the first chapter.
A brilliant debut from Mr Chambers!

Guest Post by Paul Chambers

Robbie is a man like you and me, except that he murders bad mannered people.
He had always gone through life trying to do the right thing, respecting his elders and watching his manners.

Then one day, a chance encounter made him snap. He developed an alter ego that unbeknownst to him, wreaked revenge on anyone crossing his path that had been disrespectful, ill-mannered or just plain rude.

The ones that slam doors in your faces, the ones that don’t indicate on the roads, the bullies and the type that hurt innocent animals and people. The pushy, nasty human beings that are oblivious to the world around them.

Now, the two parts of him continue separately, the like one living a life of success and excess and the other, darker one leaving a bloody trail of murder and aptly delivered revenge. Only the black outs that Robbie suffers are an indication that anything is wrong, when he awakes from what he thinks are violent dreams. Otherwise, he doesn't have a clue.

Meanwhile, an up and coming Detective Lentus has his world changed forever by the first of these vicious murders, and devotes his life to hunting down and bringing the mysterious killer to justice; whilst being haunted by the ‘ghost' of his murdered sister.

Lentus is a simple man with linear thinking, who now only has his job and his obsession driving him; now that he has lost his last remaining family member. The paths of the characters intertwine throughout London, sometimes knowingly, and sometimes not; ending in a breath taking conclusion.

This is the first of a trilogy that will span the years 1996 to 2015, and it rampages its visceral course through the history, music, culture, sexual exploits and technological advances of the time. Manners Costs Everything covers the years 1996 to 2001.

Written in shockingly graphic detail, with dark humour and an adult erotic tinge; this series of books is for the open minded lovers of horror fiction, crime fiction and thrillers.

The attack of the undead

Survival Besieged

Warning: this book contains zombies, adult themes, and adult language.

Newly released - Survival: Besieged is Book 2 in the Survival Series. Book one is Survival:Journeys.

Review from Book 1 by Marla Olson ~ Not your average zombie book

Picked this book on a recommendation and I liked it. It does make you want to see what happens next for the people caught up in this impossible situation. There is a good amount of sexual content, but I felt that was part of how people were affected by the situation (don't want to give too much away). The cadence of the story matches the title (Journeys) and the variety of characters gives you people you want to root for. Again, I would like to see the next installment in this story.

Book Description:

The United States military is experimenting on a powerful virus that initiates cellular regeneration, effectively reversing the aging process. A terrorist group develops a contagious germ that attacks the frontal lobes of the brain, destroying the ability to reason and shutting down all bodily functions.

When the military experiment accidently goes viral and the terrorist group releases the germ, it’s a deadly combination.

The world’s population is infected in a matter of weeks, turning victims into animated cadavers with a hunger for human flesh!

A handful of survivors have found a safe haven at the Farm, a self-contained compound, but the monsters are getting stronger, faster, and hungrier! To survive, the group must withstand the attack of uncountable hordes of the undead.

Excerpt ~ (Kindle Locations 99 –109 & 176-184)

There were five total building groups that made up the food and energy production for the “Farm”. Each building was broken into five parts – one algae producing building, two food production buildings and 2 maintenance/ equipment buildings. The maintenance buildings held such things as the fish/ seafood tanks, silk worm farms and earth worm farms. In the building groups where fruit trees or bushes were grown, bee hives were also maintained. The food production and the algae buildings were all 60 feet by 100 feet while the maintenance buildings were 40 feet by 80 feet.

The buildings offered a complete range of growing environments, attempting to grow the products which would be necessary for a long term survival compound. There was an area where a sixth building could have been created which was instead used for a small orchard and garden for plants which could survive the natural climate of the area.

Within the buildings, the special LED lights, using a mix of red and blue lights, maximize the growth and production potential of all plants grown. In addition, all plants were grown in a hydroponic environment which allowed for direct application of high levels of carbon dioxide directly to the roots where it was processed most effectively by the plants…

…When his wife had been infected and nearly killed him, Mike managed to escape and begin a journey to our compound. It took him over a week to finally get here. Based on his corroborated stories, he had many harrowing incidents, but finally did make it. During his journey, he met and assisted several groups of people. While the details are not widely discussed, it has become common knowledge that he basically met different woman along the way and slept with most of them. With my level of sexual desire, I could hardly blame or judge either him or the woman for their amorous encounters. I have never been a prude, but casual sex is not something I generally approve of; yet I just could not bring myself to judge anyone at this point.

In the week it took Mike to make it to the Farm, those of us who were there managed to replace much of the lights, pumps and other equipment necessary to run the power and agricultural parts of the compound. Unfortunately, our algae production had either never recovered or was negatively affected by some mysterious cause.

Squeal

SQUEAL_BiiiiiiiiiiGrs

Guest post by Enoch St. John

Warning! This is an adult thriller for a mature audience.

Outstanding!!! ~ Review by Comet

This usually isn't my "go to" genre, but I was intrigued by the cover art and teaser. Squeal is a exciting, intelligent, thriller that had twists and turns the whole way that kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a read that touches on all senses and delivers pleasant surprises around every corner.

Released June 18, 2014, Squeal by new author, Enoch St. John, is a wilderness/backwoods-type horror book that fans of dark fiction—especially fans of Lord of the Flies, Deliverance, and Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None—will love.

An allegorical tale packed with symbolism and bursting with violent, intensely visual brutal scenes, this book is not for the faint of heart.

Short synopsis: Seven dangerous juvenile delinquents get taken into the Hoh Rainforest on a wilderness therapy treatment program. But instead of redemption, the group finds a murderous beast intent on taking them out, one by one.

Longer synopsis: Jake Huntsman created WISH—Wilderness Intervention for Solutions & Healing—in order to rehabilitate the broken and the misguided, to reshape young lives before they are hardened and ruined. Deep in the Hoh Rainforest, his wards are forced to reevaluate the world around them, and the values they embody.

Since the program’s inception, Jake has had to deal with troubled teens of all sorts: kleptomaniacs, alcoholics, addicted gamers. Jake’s latest group of troubled teens includes an arsonist, an armed robber, a belligerent bully, and a boy who drove a fellow classmate to suicide.

But Jake discovers he has more than just wayward kids to deal with as the WISH trip to redemption gets interrupted by a monstrous force: a rabid, feral hog, bred to be destroyed, intent on devouring the skeletal team of leaders and seven deadly teens, one by one.

Squeal is now available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and OmniLit.

It is also available in print.

Coming soon to Apple!

About the author: Enoch St. John has a degree in Political Science with a concentration in Comparative Politics from UCSD, as well as a degree in English Literature, Communication, and Art.

St. John has lived in several countries—a few in the West Indies—plus several U.S. states, including New York, Minnesota, California, and Washington.

St. John is currently in southern California.

Wow. ~ Review by Tom S.
I felt compelled to write a review to say this book is disturbing. Mission accomplished Mr. author. This was an intense read. I've read many books of this genre and although short, this is a compelling story that will keep your attention.

*** Warning - This is a horror book and contains scenes that may be upsetting for some readers.

Chris’ life of luxury is gone, devastated by the collapse of the European economy. Gas, water, and electricity are all cut off. Food is running out. Even his wife and daughter have gone. Huddled in the smallest room of their lavish house with his petrified and dirty eight-year-old son, Chris has made the decision to stay put. A small army of psychotic scavengers is outside, hell-bent on making the once-privileged pay. Chris now knows that not leaving when he had the option was the worst decision of his life.

Cowering in his home, he watches as his neighbours are dragged into the street and brutally executed. The scavengers have one more house to go, and then it will be his turn. He has to act fast, or he and his son will meet the same fate.

Driven by the need to survive, Chris has decided to keep secrets from his son. Secrets that will make all of the events up until this point seem trivial. Secrets that, one way or another, will come out before the day is done.

Guest Post by Bekki Pate

The Willow Tree is an adult thriller for a mature audience.

I heard the snap of their jaws, the click and scrape of their fingernails on the cold, metal door. They were angry, impatient and hungry.

Their loud, tortured screams pierced the otherwise quiet corridor; there was no one left now. No one left, except me.

Nick Jenkins cannot sleep. He drinks too much. All he can think about is her, and the night she disappeared. He is being taunted by her face, by those creatures who keep wearing it, mocking him.

He is close, so close, but he is not the only one looking for her.

Who will get to her first? And if he finds her, will she be the same as he remembered?

Sometimes the dead come back

Echoes of Harmony

Echoes of Harmony: Sometimes the dead come back

A horror suspense adult thriller for a mature audience.

I love how the author, Miranda Nading, has subtitled her book - Sometimes the dead come back. (Scary!!!) Here is a brief blurb from the book description:

Celia Davenport worked faithfully for seventeen long years to honor her divine inheritance.

Dana Mitchell fought her way off the streets of Memphis to build a life she could be proud of. As the Director of the Department of Family Services, she was in a unique position to help other young girls beat the odds.

When a serial killer targets her girls and closes in on her daughter, Dana becomes the primary suspect of a vindictive detective. In order to stop the slaughter, she must uncover the terrible truth of her family’s past- and face the dead.

Excerpt from CHAPTER ONE ~ (Kindle Locations 58-81)

Dead leaves and branches cracked under her feet as she moved off the path and into the old forgotten cemetery. She could almost smell the woman’s fear— thick and rich, waiting to be tasted. The deep shadows of the old church stood silent and still against the starless sky on the horizon, barely visible through winter’s unadorned trees. Silent, but not lonely. A castle still waiting for the knights that had abandoned her.

She knew this place like an old friend. Every tombstone was a wrinkle around eyes that stared into her soul. They watched her as she went about her work, guarded her when she lay down to sleep each night. Stepping easily around chunks of fallen angels and temples for the long dead, she closed her eyes and inhaled , the soft smells of decaying earth embraced her. The prodigal daughter returned. They had tried to keep her away. Lied to her, imprisoned her, hurt her— but in the end, she had found her way back. And now it was her turn.

A whisper of dry leaves and muffled sobs brought a dark smile to Celia’s lips. There were times when she loved to sit in the stillness around them, watching them fight back their fear. Fear of the final judgment, which sits deep in everyone’s gut, waiting for the little spark to fan the flames. Some understood that the time had come to pay for their sins and they accepted the heavy price with quiet tears while they begged for forgiveness and mercy. Others fought against the coming darkness, screaming and bucking against their restraints , refusing to acknowledge that greed and perversity had ruled their lives even as the last ounce of life fled into the darkness.

This one, her dark flesh barely visible against the stark headstone where she lay, was the last in a long line of whores and thieves. The key. The piece of the puzzle that would lay it all on Elizabeth’s doorstep. That last and final delicious prize was almost within her reach. So much hard work, so many diligent nights— but God had rewarded her.

Miranda Nading“With the children gone and my degree completed, we have contracted to work as civilian employees in the National Parks.  This new adventure has given me the time and freedom needed to dedicate myself to writing and exploring America's most protected treasures.” ~ Miranda Nading

Strange Hunting

Strange Hunting

Nailed it! ~ Review by Penny. “As I finished the first chapter of this book, I looked over at my husband and said, “This is freaking cool, you’ll want to read it when I’m done.” Little did I know that this book would grip me tight and I would finish reading it at about 4 am the next morning. I love supernatural tales, and this book does not disappoint. The writer has a real knack for storytelling, and the editor and formatter did a great job with it. I will be recommending it to my book club, and pretty much everyone else I know. Really, it’s like sci-fi buttah.”

From the Author – what Dave Robertson says about the story…

There is still magic in the world. There are still blank spots on the map, still places where people follow age old rituals and superstitions.

Berk Willis has been to these places. He has seen things that cannot be explained and found creatures that most people would never believe. In his travels he has been all over the world: from the dark forests of Finland and an ancient graveyard in Norway to the Jungles of South America and the remote reaches of Africa. He has met odd characters, seen mysterious rituals, and faced strange monsters.

The world is not always the safe, routine place we would like it to be. Fearsome beasts still roam primeval jungles. Dark creatures still lurk in distant shadows.

Join Berk Willis as he hunts for the strange, the mysterious, and the unexplained.

Excerpt (Kindle Locations 29-41) –

What the Main character has to say!

Intro
I never thought I’d write a book about my travels. I always kept a journal, but it was just for my own memories. Years after most of these strange hunts, a few people convinced me to put it all down in book form. You’ll notice that some place names have intentionally been left out. A lot of people don’t want their town to be associated with deadly creatures, for a lot of reasons. Otherwise, I’ve retold events as accurately as possible.

So, you’re wondering what’s in the book. Yes, there are diverse people, exotic places, and peculiar beasts . My strange hunts took me to some pretty amazing places: wild Scandinavian forests, African jungles, remote European villages, even the great Sahara desert. I have met tribesmen, soldiers, princes, and spies. I’ve feasted with gypsies and spent plenty of nights in graveyards. I hunted legendary predators, demons, even some zoological remnants left over from the days of dinosaurs. I wanted to explore, to see new places and to go places other people never did. I hunted these creatures because I felt I was good at it, a good use of skills I had. I also got to explore some of the blank spots on the world’s maps, and I found out that there is still magic in the world.

I got to see a side of the world that people rarely see, and I wouldn’t trade that for anything. This book will give you a glimpse of that world. I hope you find it interesting. - Berk Willis
