Celebrations with the family can be bliss or blight. Here's hoping yours was the former but close family life frequently causes tensions around the holidays. Imagine if that was the reality every day of the year.
This is Isobel's world in 'Delusion', as she struggles with a mother, not just critical and fault-finding, but whose life purpose seems to be that she make her daughter's life a nightmare. Cynthia Hobson cannot be happy unless her daughter is not, and then she's delighted.
Out 26th December, “Delusion” is Book 2 of 'The Narcissism Novels' and a timely arrival for anyone frustrated with their own family interaction, it may make you very grateful not to have a mother like Cynthia. For those not aware of the current phenomenon of narcissistic personality disorder, those suffering with it are along the same lines as a sociopath-completely lacking in empathy for others, using them only for their own purposes to keep themselves in the spotlight of attention.

In 'Illusion', Book 1 of The Narcissism Novels, Cynthia was subtly monstrous and her attitudes to her only daughter were not obvious until further in the book, when it becomes clear she will do anything to steal Dylan, Isobel's adored son and colludes with Dylan's alcoholic father to get her way. Taking the things Isobel loves away from her is Cynthia's obsession and the scenes at Isobel's father's funeral demonstrate her self-absorbed nature perfectly. At the climax of 'Illusion', Dylan had disappeared from their home and Isobel was grief-stricken and unable to relax into her new relationship with Gabriel, a man completely the opposite from her usual choice of men that like to deliver the same emotional cruelty as her mother.
As 'Delusion' opens, we reconnect with Isobel, desperate to get her son back in her life but battling parental alienation not only from Matt, his father, but also her own mother. It is hardly surprising that she struggles to maintain her self esteem and cannot enjoy being finally loved by Gabriel in the way she's always wished for. She tries to maintain the life she's built but an edge of self-destruction always returns. Like many of us, Isobel cannot accept what she truly desires for fear of the pain of losing it.
The Narcissism Novels are both a comfort to those who know the agony of having a 'Mother who cannot love' and interesting to those who believe that surely no mother could ever treat her own child so terribly.
