Book Description:

Can a half-Ute boy survive abusive white men?

Sixteen-year-old Jimmy Hunter loves dead things. Decaying fossils and buried men no longer have the power to bite or abuse. Jimmy’s problems exist with the living. The half-Ute-Indian boy must survive the angry white men his mother insists on dating without killing them. Because like it or not, he has killed. The list he keeps has over 500 names on it. He doesn’t want to add any more. Can Jimmy escape to the reservation for the life he’s dreamed of? Or will he die trying?

“I understand that cultures can be very different, but people at their heart are the same.”

LT Kodzo

Award-winning Author of Locker 572 releases her second book Dead Things.

EXCERPT: CHAPTER 1

Q: What does the word dinosaur mean?

A: Terrible lizard.

“I love dead things.”

The noise in the classroom stopped.

The PowerPoint presentation behind Jimmy illuminated the dim room in a creepy blue.

His tenth-grade English teacher frowned at him. She probably thought he was going to talk about zombies or ghosts or something dumb. But he wasn’t. Jimmy actually did love dead things.

The real dead.

The decayed and silent and harmless dead.

He cleared his throat to continue, but Mrs. Harris stopped him before he could say another word.

“Tell us your name,” the teacher said.

Jimmy rolled his eyes. He hated the introduction ritual, not just because it was stupid, but because he didn’t like his full name. James Hunter was his father’s name, and Jimmy wanted nothing to do with that dead, white man. But he currently had a bigger problem facing him. In order to get out of the F-zone in English, he had to finish his two-hundred-word, oral essay.

He bit the inside of his lip. Not a single student smiled at him. A couple kids refused to even make eye contact. He tossed his long, black braid over his shoulder and asked, “Do I get all of my points if I start over?”

Mrs. Harris squinted at him before addressing the entire class. “I will make this one exception, but you all know better. I’ve told you all year how important it is to introduce yourself during public speaking events. I will dock anyone else five points if I have to remind you again.”

To emphasize her point, she jabbed her index finger toward a couple of boys in the back. One of them whispered, “great,” while the other flipped Jimmy off from under his desk.

Whatever. Making his bullies angry didn’t matter. He didn’t prepare his “I Love Blank” assignment for them anyway. He did it for his grade. Parent-teacher conferences were in two days and Pyen wouldn’t like that he was failing English. Not that his mother would do anything harsh. She left that task up to whatever white boyfriend she had at the time. She always blabbed to them about him.

“We’re waiting.” Mrs. Harris tapped her pencil on the clipboard.

The class laughed. That didn’t bother Jimmy either. When you weigh over two-hundred-fifty pounds at sixteen years old, you get used to laughs. Instead, Jimmy stood up tall and cleared his throat.

“My name is James Hunter.” He barfed out the hideous title, then added the facts everyone already knew. “I’m a sophomore at Fife High in Puyallup, Washington, and I’d like to present my oral essay titled ‘I Love Dead Things’.”

He glanced at the teacher and she nodded. A girl in the front row leaned forward and pulled long sleeves over bruised wrists. Jimmy didn’t know her, but he recognized the reason for winter flannel while the rest of the school embraced spring in summer shorts. He advanced the presentation. “According to Merriam-Webster, the word ‘dead’ means something is no longer alive.

“It can no longer feel. It can no longer move. Therefore, it can no longer hurt you.”

He exhaled. Thirty-two words done, one-hundred-sixty-eight to go. While he was used to being fat, he still didn’t like standing exposed to the critical eyes of his classmates.

He clicked to the next slide where an animated, screaming T. rex appeared to climb into the room. “The Tyrannosaurus rex has historically been labeled one of the most ferocious animals to ever walk on land, yet since extinction, his reputation has changed.”

The next page showed images of Barney, plus the horse-like T. rex from the Age of Zombies and the quirky smiles of monsters turned friendly in the old TV show Dinosaurs. Jimmy talked about how most people didn’t even know that the word dinosaur meant terrible lizard. “Their ability to entertain has replaced the true facts related to them.

“While some modern re-creators of this savage beast captured its real desire to kill and destroy”—Jimmy clicked through images from the movie Jurassic Park, and the game Minecraft and a screenshot of Grimlock from Transformers—“the real question is, why would anyone choose to change the idea of something so vicious and present it as tamable?”

He looked around the classroom. Kids that sometimes snickered at him were paying attention. Cool. He exhaled again and shifted his weight from one sore foot to the other. This was actually working out for him. After spending a life studying death, he found a place where his childhood experience proved useful. He swallowed and said, “Dead things are safe things.” He looked directly at the front-row girl. “The dead no longer have the ability to hurt the living.”

He clicked to a pic of a museum with the skeletal remains of frozen beasts.

“They are quiet.”

He clicked on an image of an old lady putting flowers into the mouth of a T. rex vase.

“They are tamed.”

He clicked on his favorite picture and smiled. The green-painted monster that monitored downtown Vernal, Utah. The statue, two states away, was dressed in a cowboy hat eating a gigantic watermelon. He loved this corny image for two reasons. It validated that the dead were honestly tamed and because it stood only twenty-five miles down the highway from the Uintah and Ouray Reservation where his mother was born.

“In our world today, dinosaurs are fun. You can’t say that about most living animals until long after they are dead.” He hadn’t written the report for the girl in the front row or anyone else like her, but he desperately wanted her to hear and understand. Her situation had a solution. He cleared his throat. “So, next time you visit a cemetery or a museum, consider how quiet and calm it is and remember, the dead always rest in peace.”

The End appeared on the screen only to be eaten by an animated clip-art T. rex.

Mrs. Harris prompted the other tenth graders to clap. Jimmy felt his brown cheeks warm as he squeezed his way back to his desk. It was over and nothing bad happened. Until, of course, he sat down.

Plastic crunched beneath his butt.

Crap.

Girl-like giggles came from the boys behind him.

He smelled the applesauce before he felt the broken snack-pack seep through his stretch pants. He placed his hand on the desk and stared forward. The only way these boys would win with this prank was if he acknowledged that it happened. He didn’t move. He sat there without shifting through six other presentations until the bell rang. He’d kept a spare pair of sweats in his locker since freshman year. He refused to let a couple glee-geeks steal this moment from him.

Besides, now that the worst part of his day was over, he started to think about the worst part of his night.

Anxiety crawled around in his gut as the rest of the students filed from the class. In less than an hour, he’d be just another young Indian trying to survive in the white man’s world.

So You Think You Know Me

3D_book_cover11

UK USA CDN AU

It's written in such a way that I could relax into the story and get clear mental images as she relayed stories of confusion and injustice as someone needing what all children need - love, acceptance, and nurture. An honest, at times angry autobiographical account. ~ Excerpt of review by Rebecca White

Book Description:

'So You Think You Know Me' is about the life of Siobhán Foster and the choices she made growing up in Ireland. It is her perspective on her life and is told with honesty and humour. Instead of letting her situation corrupt her, she set out to find a different path to break the behavioural loop of her ancestors.

We cannot change others, only ourselves, so Siobhán took a magnifying glass and turned it on herself to see the changes she needed to make. Throughout her story you can see how she made hard choices that forced her to change and see herself and the world through different eyes.

She changed her best friends of despair, anger and resentment, into tenacity, courage and hope. This is a story about 'not giving up' despite the odds being stacked against you. In her creative way, Siobhán takes you on an emotional journey where you will laugh with her, cry with her and get sucked in and absorbed into her world, as she searches for peace, joy and freedom.

Let this book inspire you to change. As each person chooses to change, the world becomes a better place.

Volume increase is abusive

VolumeIncrease2

Hot Topic Post about video and the Entertainment Industry!

Volume increase in commercials is detrimental to your hearing and overall feeling in your body. I feel like I am in the middle of a crisis when the volume jumps up on any device. If it is the TV I am watching, you will normally see me ready to quickly press mute.

This post is prompted by an unpleasant experience this morning. I contacted the website (which I choose not to name) with the following complaints:

  • I came to this site today to watch a video segment. Imagine my surprise when the sponsor video was ten times the volume as the show video.
  • It also is disturbing to see that there is 2 minutes of video and then a sponsorship blast. This is frankly a waste of my time and I am terribly disappointed and do not appreciate the onslaught of noise in my ears.
  • I set the volume on my computer at what I want it to be and that is the volume it should be at.

When is this world going to catch on that it is abusive to increase the volume for commercials?

And while I am on the topic there is another related issue that needs to be addressed as well. Ever notice that the background music in shows overshadows the characters speaking?

For a hearing impaired person, such as myself, this is really annoying. I cannot hear what the characters are saying. If the camera is on their face then I can read their lips most of the time. If not, then it is game over for me. I ask my husband what is being said which interrupts the show. This causes me to feel anxiety and often times I refuse to watch shows that operate that way because I cannot handle the stress it creates.

Yes, this posting is a bit of a rant, however it is important to note that I am taking my power back. I will no longer be watching videos on the website that is not mentioned. (Silly sentence)

I am hoping anyone who comes across this post and agrees with me will also take their power back. If we let our complaints be known and stop engaging with these websites and shows, then perhaps things will change.

At the very least, when you see something or experience something you do not like, when you flip it around it shows you what you do like and wish to experience.

The Other Side of Anger

Book_cover__The_other_Side_of_Anger_

Excerpt of Review by BJ ~ The Message: Hope and Life Legacy. Your beginning does not define you. You can change.

We need to pay attention. Anger is becoming epidemic! Jack Perry is passionate about changing the world, one person at a time. This book is a testament that no matter how poor the beginning or the circumstances that you are in now, you can make the change and live the life that you were meant to live.

Guest article by Jack Perry

No man or woman should ever live in fear of another human being; nobody has the right to convince you that you are less than what your heart, spirit and inner voice has programmed you to be in this universe. Everyone who reads this book will walk away different, for the better. Jack Perry, Jr., a former police officer, military pilot and business leader, has written in his own words and personal style a hard-hitting book about his last conversations with his father, before his father passed away.

These are impactful conversations every son or daughter should have with a parent at some point, before it's too late. Jack's father was an angry man, and his anger impacted many lives. In the final days of his father's life, Jack decided to visit him, and ask the hard-hitting, impactful questions about his father's verbal abuse, domestic violence, alcohol abuse, leadership style, and his own childhood.

That was the last time he saw his father alive. Jack shares his very personal life lessons, and how he recognizes the same behaviors permeating society today...the hidden facade so many people live, out of fear, societal pressure and anger.

He writes about what he has learned from his own mistakes, views and paradigms about life, love, people, violence, death, humanity and service to others. The book addresses anger and fear in the lives of everyone living today.

Anger and fear infects CEOs, business leaders, employees, children, parents, and our political leaders. Impactful, insightful solutions and tools are the wisdoms that Jack shares in his book-the defining moments and the people who had impact in his life for positive change.

"Enjoy my book with an open mind." Jack Perry, Jr.

Loving My Abuser

Loving My Abuser

Review by sherrypyye 1 ~ Page-Turner

“Wow, this book took me through so many emotions such as anger, sadness and fear. You hear about child abuse all the time, but to see it through a child's eyes makes it more heartbreaking. It gives you a different point of view. You often wonder what a child is thinking when they are being punished and abused, so for the author to have the courage to write out his feelings is great. I have never read a book so fast because I could not wait to see what happened in the end. This is a must-read. Especially if you have children, or thinking about having children, or know someone with children, it doesn't matter, your emotions will be effected. Hopefully there will be sequels, I want to follow this family.”

Loving My Abuser is available on Amazon!

Book Description:

In a perfect world, little boys want to emulate their fathers. Mike Antheny was no different. He had a great deal of unconditional love, affection and admiration for his father and he wanted nothing more than to be loved in return.

From the tender age of five, Mike's father desensitized him with every verbal, mental, emotional and physical beating. Each and every day was filled with abuse. If it wasn’t Mike Antheny that suffered at the hand of his father, it was his mother or one of his seven siblings.

A father is supposed to protect, love and shelter his children but his father was the one they needed protecting from.

In today’s society it’s almost unheard of for an African American male to share a part of him that is so personal. Mike Antheny's accounts will guide you through the horrific ordeals that he personally experienced day in and day out. Prepare yourself as each incident will tug at your heart, evoke your anger and leave you breathless. This is told from the eyes of the seventh child.

Excerpt- Reflection ~ (Kindle Locations 129-144)

Ideally when people reflect on their childhood memories, they reflect on happy times, innocent moments and warm and fuzzy feelings. Unfortunately, the reality of my upbringing takes me to a place of overwhelming sadness, darkness and unspeakable rage. When I think back on my childhood memories, I feel nothing but regret and pain.

My memory of those days depresses me to the point of feeling as if I want to cry. For many years, I ignored my feelings. It was my thought that boys and men were not supposed to show their emotions. I thought that showing my emotions would be a sign of weakness. I was told that men were not supposed to have emotional issues. We were supposed to be strong both physically and mentally.

So I ignored my turbulent memories and tried to forget the turmoil that stewed inside of me. However, I would always find myself face to face with the demons inside of me. I realized that there was no disguising this and the mask was going to have to come off sooner or later. If I were going to fix this, I knew I could no longer suppress it. I had to face reality and realize that something was wrong. I knew I wasn’t going to be mentally prepared to deal with the emotions I sought out to find . I also knew by keeping things inside it would continue to form the monster that was evolving inside of me.

I had so many questions about my life. I knew I couldn’t ask my father and as for my mother, I just couldn’t rehash those monstrous moments. She had gone through so much already. This was going to take a lot of courage, a lot of crying, and a lot of healing.

Nurses' Romance: Laurie & Andrew

Nurses' Romance
Available on Amazon

Tough topics addressed in this short novel. The first chapter is named "Tough Decisions" so that is a clue. This review tells what the story is about!

Review by  Heather - Great start to the series
"This is a great start to a unique story. The e-book is a little on the shorter side, but it is an introduction and ends at a good point so you want to know more, but you’re at a good spot to pause and wait for more. It moves quickly and the characters are easy to relate to, so it’s a great read if you aren't looking for an epic adventure to hold your attention for days. And it looks like there are future books to grow the plot.

One thing I love about this book is that the main character has had an exceptionally rough life. She is struggling to raise twins born following abuse by her uncle. She kept the children and lived with her parents who were very supportive. But after a failed relationship—the first time she opened herself to love—she decides to escape her hometown and strike out entirely on her own. It’s after taking this giant leap that she meets Andrew. It doesn't get much harder for the leading lady than that in the romance genre. I really appreciated that a book has such a strong character with such a difficult past."

Excerpt:
Twenty-five-year-old Laurie meadows brushed her long, auburn hair back impatiently from her heart-shaped face. She was running late for her job as a charge nurse in the men’s rehab unit at Wellesley rehabilitation center.

Her twins, Billy and Brenda, had given her some hard time again today when she dropped them off at the sitter’s house on her way to work. She’d lost fifteen minutes trying to reason with them. The sitter assured her that her kids would be off happily playing with the other kids by the time she pulled into Wellesley’s parking lot ten minutes away. She urged her to drop off her kids, kiss them good-bye, and go.

But, Laurie couldn't do that. It had been only eight weeks since they’d left their grandparents’ home and moved to San Diego. Unaccustomed to her twelve-hour shifts and to being left with a sitter, her eleven-year-olds were not adapting well to the absence of their grandparents or their mother’s twelve-hour shifts at Wellesley. She just couldn't drop them off and turn her back on them.
