Book Description:

True friends can make all the difference.

George has been fascinated with the idea of time travel ever since the shocking death of his mother when he was ten, and hopes someday to find a friend like Filby, the closest friend of the time traveler in the 1960 movie The Time Machine. George’s high school friends, Dave and Nancy (AKA Onion), struggle to understand his odd obsession. The story takes place during the three friend’s senior year, with a major revelation in store for George on graduation day.

Excerpt from Chapter One - SO IT BEGINS

It’s early.  Real early.  Dave and I were the first ones to arrive.  It’s as quiet as a morgue, with most of the hallway lights still off.  With no one else around, I was surprised the doors were open since the place is usually locked down like the prison it vaguely resembles.

Dave picked me up right at dawn.  Since he has a car and I don’t, I reluctantly agreed to roll out of bed way ahead of my regular schedule.  Real early was still better than the dreaded school bus from hell I had to take on occasion when a ride from Dave wasn’t possible.  Dave said he had “something to do,” and now I know what it is.  Dave’s standing on a classroom chair, yelling into a security camera.  Never mind that it doesn’t record sound; I guess Dave’s expression and unfriendly gestures are enough to get his message across.  The chair seat is flexing and groaning under Dave’s weight and I’m standing by apprehensive, waiting for the seat to splinter and for Dave to come tumbling down like Humpty Dumpty, cradle and all and whatnot.

He’s still angry about some decision the school administration announced yesterday regarding student organization budgets or benefits or something.  Not that Dave really cared about any of that; he just loves any opportunity to act offended at anything the administration does.  I guess putting it all on tape for some unsuspecting security guard or secretary to see was his way of making his displeasure known.

The second week of our senior year and already Dave is in rare form.  He’s screeching now in full rant, his face just inches away from the camera lens.  It was a beautiful performance, gloriously obscene, a marvel of four-letter words strung together like a true maestro.

When he was finished, he gave the camera an obscene gesture with both hands.

Spent and out of breath, he climbed down from the chair and dragged it back where it belonged.

Dave calls our school “The Big Brown Box,” where we’re “processed” and “churned out like obedient zombies.”  I guess its Dave’s calling to be a rabble rouser, but I’m not sure you can make a living at it.  If you could, though, Dave would make a very good one.

“So.  How was the rant?” Dave asked, still out of breathe but beaming with pride.

I thought a moment, comparing it to his past performances.

            “Oh, I don’t know.  I’d give it a solid B, maybe a B plus.”

Dave seemed pleased with the grade.

“Thanks.  It wasn’t a personal best, but it was pretty good, wasn’t it?’

            “Sure, Dave.  Sure.”

I patted the big guy on the back, and then we headed off to the cafeteria to sit at our favorite table and wait for them to open so we could get our usual morning cup of joe.

*           *           *

Our Big Brown Box was one of those sprawling eyesores of a building-- ominous, pompous and dreary, not unlike a few of our teachers.  Built in what seemed like record time, it towered over the neighborhood.  Metal detectors by the main doors were installed our sophomore year, as were the surveillance cameras and doors that locked electronically when classes began.  The joke was they were either trying to keep the bad guys out or the inmates in.  Even the drug-sniffing dog they brought in unannounced on occasion seemed afraid of the place and always bolted out the door when its job was done.

“Hear that, people?” Dave said loudly one morning when all those electronic locks kicked in with their usual thunk that reverberated down the halls.  “Homeland Security cares about you.”

Even though our senior year had just begun, oddly enough I was already getting a bit nostalgic, and was thinking lately about my freshman year.  Freshman year was essentially hell week that never ended.  Yeah, we were the scum, the newbies, the dorks and freaks and nerds and geeks that nobody loved or wanted.  There were notable exceptions, of course-- the few girls with supermodel looks already and an even smaller number of jocks with overactive thyroids who towered over the rest of us and made first team without even breaking a sweat.  (Actually, Dave was one of those.)  But like I said, they were the exceptions.  The rest of us had to bow and scrap to the upperclassmen, even those who had little status otherwise.  It got old fast to find all your stuff in the trash if you left it unattended for even a minute, or have someone cut in line in front of you just because you’re new.

"I actually read it twice to make sure I hadn't missed anything the first time through- the plot twists and turns are just so clever. It's one of those rare novels you find yourself thinking about and reacting to for days afterwards- to me, that's not just good fiction, that's great fiction." ~ Linda Yung

A Rebel Star

A Rebel Star

a literary gem ~ Review by Meghan TOP 1000 REVIEWER

Two years ago, I thoroughly enjoyed Alyssa Rae’s debut novel, ‘A Lion’s Pride.’ So when I accidentally found that she has a new book, I snapped it up right away. And I’m happy to report that I was not disappointed— ‘A Rebel Star’ bears the author’s distinct style and creativity. I’m not sure how she does it, or how she masterfully crafts these complex plots, but she’s obviously at the peak of her literary powers—a fact that’s obvious right at the get go. Check out the first opening pages and you’ll see.

A Rebel Star’ features a young British teenaged upstart named Marienela—or Mari to her friends. Mari lives a privileged life as a member of London’s upper crust. Her father, a businessman, has business interests around the globe. Mari’s internal struggle begins when she learns about Nigeria at school. It just happens that Nigeria is the specific country that would soon be affected by a recent major business decision made by her own father. Rich in oil, Nigeria is being torn apart by various agents of greed and corruption—from the government officials to oil companies that want to exploit the oil to its fullest capacity. Learning that her father has a direct hand in the suffering of its people, aside from the questions Mari wants answered regarding her own mother, Mari does the unthinkable—she flies to Nigeria to witness first-hand how the locals suffered from the oil companies’ machinations. What follows is a rich, eye-opening tapestry of the kind of life those in London (and the rest of the First World) only so rarely, if ever, get to witness and experience.

The chapters devoted to Mari’s encounters with the poor folk and the in-fighting in Nigeria are worth more than the price of this book. Author Alyssa Rae has crafted a believable character in Marienela, one that you can deeply empathize with. The author manages to create an unforgettable character whose evolution from the pampered teen to one who so willingly stand among the oppressed is jaw-droppingly competent. ‘A Rebel Star’ is an engaging read. Devote a full weekend to be awed. Highly recommended.

Attracted to him like a vampire

Take a Piece of my Heart Instagram

Have you ever flipped through books on Amazon looking at the cover and description only? I must say the cover for this book and the description are excellent BUT looking into this book gives it the attention it deserves. Excerpt below review!
He was a real badass, and I was attracted to him like a vampire is enticed to the fresh, savory blood of a virgin. - Kara Salinger Morino (main character)
Excerpt of Book Description: Kara begins her journey as a youthful innocent woman who marries the town bad boy against her parent’s wishes. A James Dean rebel clone…”THAT GUY”. You know the type because we have all had one of those in our past. Am I right? Though her bad choices bring her face-to-face with the dark side of human nature, Kara’s heartfelt desire to find a pure and everlasting love give her the courage to take chances. This is the story of Kara and her quest to find her voice, freedom from her past and her own identity. She is a strong spirited female with a snarky attitude and an often-colorful viewpoint on life. Kara is no Barbie doll (either in build or temperament) and thus, her tale will relate to many female readers.

‘Take a Piece of My Heart’ is Kara’s journey of love, friendships, romance, lust and loss. She learns slowly that mistrust, love and hatred of some people may require a second chance.

This "New Author" has a bright future in the book world!

EXCERPT – PROLOGUE

Duffy, Diane Rose. Take a Piece of My Heart (Kindle Locations 107-127).

So this is what it feels like to hit rock bottom and join the ranks of the scum of the earth. I feel intense pain as my arms are jerked behind my back. Seriously, is it really necessary to be so rough when I'm obviously not resisting? When I hear the click of the handcuffs and feel the tightness around my wrists, it becomes quite evident this cop has either a vendetta against women, or little-dick syndrome.
I glance over at Danny as he is being questioned, not detecting a smidgen of remorse in his expression. I can only overhear bits and pieces of his conversation, but what I do hear turns my heart to stone. Any love I ever had for this man completely broke away and melted like ice in a kiln from my wounded heart. He’s conversing with the good cop because it seems I apparently got assigned the bad cop. As I eavesdrop from afar, Danny is insisting to the good cop, She needs to be arrested. I want to press charges so take the bitch to jail.

I'm thinking to myself that Danny will not get the satisfaction of watching me cry again. The bad cop starts frisking and feeling me out, and I look around at my neighbors and friends who are enjoying the spectacle in our yard when the floodgates of tears open with a vengeance. So much for that no crying intention. I'm not in the least too proud to beg Mr. Bad Cop to pretty please not take me to jail. I ramble on, professing about how I am so terribly sorry and it was all a huge misunderstanding. Many times I repeat what a good person I actually am, and that jail is most certainly not the place for a decent person such as myself. I continue to plead and sob but Mr. Bad Cop just snickers, ducks my head and shoves me in to the back seat of his police car---the very smelly and disgusting police car, to be precise. Not that I'm one to complain or anything, but Mr. Bad Cop was not very gentle and the police car is really smelly and disgusting like it should be a coroner’s vehicle. You must get the drift, right? But it’s not in my nature to whine. Who am I kidding? Silently in my mind I'm complaining, whining, cussing and downright fuming. However, what I feel the most is betrayed and alone.

I take one final glimpse around. I observe Danny still recounting his version of the story to Mr. Good Cop while staring at me with that hoity toity smug look on his face. If at all possible, I would go back and kick his teeth down his throat and make this degradation all really worth it. The neighbors have varying expressions on their faces, kaleidoscoping from sympathy, to remorse and a few in obvious titillation.

Yay me-hell on earth, the pokey here I come.

Memoir: Right-Hearted

smash

Right-Hearted

Right-Hearted is a thought provoking book that the young author has truly written from his heart! Review by Daisy HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWER

This book is one of the most meaningful and enjoyable books that I have ever read. The author writes from his heart and his writing is so moving and genuine that I cried when I read the book. Since the book was not that long, I actually read it twice.

After reading the book, I am so looking forward to reading more books from this talented young author!

This is a must read for young people, teens and honestly, EVERYONE. It is a book that I found unforgettable!

Highly recommend this book!

Amazing Life Changing Short Story – Book Description:

Right-Hearted: Finding What's Right With A Wrong Sided Heart, is a short memoir about my life-threatening heart conditions and an unforgettable girl. I was born with a broken heart. Literally. My heart is on the right side instead of the left. I was also born with 6 other random congenital heart defects, which have demanded that I undergo dangerous open-heart surgeries since my birth 16 years ago. After my last operation 3 years ago, at barely 14, I was sent away to live so that I would not kill myself. I spent 2 years learning to accept my heart conditions and learning to appreciate my beating heart. The blurry ambulance rides, countless surgeries, metal machines and two years in a Montana therapy school have all contributed to the unique teenager I am today.

I never knew anybody who completely understood my unique struggles until that night under the full moon.

Standing before the sky I had little idea my next two weeks would be overwhelmed with wild love, lust, confusion, tears and a beautiful girl. She and I would share the stories of our hearts...our right-sided hearts. Right-Hearted: Finding What's Right With A Wrong Sided Heart is the story of two lustful teenagers who together confront their life-threatening conditions and learn to embrace their broken hearts.

Daniel Wallock

Daniel Wallock

Perhaps the most realistic love story I've read ` Review by C. Peterson

Great stories and miniskirts share two required elements: they're short enough to arouse interest but long enough to cover the subject. This book fits this description perfectly. Wallock reveals his inner ruminations and insecurities in ways I have felt but not known how to express, and puts heart into his words without getting sappy or "woe is me." The meat of a good story is story, after all, and many memoirs miss this while Wallock keeps story to the front from page one to The End. This is a memoir the way they should be written.
