Ektek - Who will save the animals?

EKTEK

Creative and well-written ~ Review by Lucidity
"EKTEK" is by far one of the most unique, original and interesting reads I have came across over the past few months. I am glad to come across an author that isn't afraid to think outside of the box and try something new that I personally consider to be far from the norm and the mainstream. Of course, for an imaginative and creative story to be done justice it must also have a strong plot structure and foundation - and in that regard, I'd say that Victoria Osborne has really pulled it off as the story progresses in a very smooth, fluid, and complete manner. I do think that some of the characters would have benefited from some more detail and better dialogue but other than that, I'd consider EKTEK to be worth the read.

"Who ever heard of a frog flying a plane? Or a wallaby riding a trike? EKTEK #Animals #Activists

Book Description:

What if endangered animals decided they could no longer wait patiently for their own extinction?

What if they formed a secret group of resistance activists based in a zoo called Bedlam?

EKTEK like to think of themselves as an ace team of environmental warriors (ecology/technology). The truth is more surreal. Who ever heard of a frog flying a plane? Or a wallaby riding a trike? Or a Palm cockatoo piloting a wingship? Or a space ship powered by bombardier beetle juice?

Ektek by V M Osborne
Ektek activists insist on their right to survive, their right to quality of life and their right to liberty. How far will they go? How far can they go? How can they improve their conflict resolution skills?

A little Siren (on sale for 99 cents)
Sexy fairy tales for adults! ~ Review by K. Allen TOP 1000 REVIEWER
The 2nd book to a great sexy series. This book can be a standalone but you get more out of it if you read the first. Very well written and filled with great scenes. Its a fun sexy twist on an adult fairy tale and is both creative and a blast to read. A real page turner and worth your time for sure. Highly recommended. Very sexy and great tension and suspense!
Book Description:

The King of Denkered has searched the seas for three years, in his quest to reach the mercreature who saved him from a ship wreck, but he gives up, tired of chasing a dream.

"One day. One day after he convinced himself to propose to an unsuitable, unrefined, unliked, conniving girl, he found the woman he'd been looking for."

Contrarily to what one would assume, Silvia isn't masochistic, so when they meet again, she has no intention to waste her time on the yummy piece of man she'd saved three years ago.

He may have been the object of every single one of her fantasies, but he's taken. Women who manage to get a man to forget his attachment get what they deserve: a cheating ass.

End of story, right?
----
A little Siren is the second book of Not Quite the Fairy Tale, and although they are standalones, they are meant to be read in order as the characters interact.

Beware of strong language and adult situations, although this is no non-stop erotica.
A little Siren was a great story, the second in the series ` Review by Romance LoverA little Siren was a great story, the second in the series. I was totally surprised multiple times. I love love love Seb and the part he plays. Eric really irritated me - in a good way - over and over, so much I wanted to climb into the story and knock some sense into him.
Silvia was a strong, courageous woman, I was in awe of her many times. She didn't take crap from anyone, even from Eric, the hot sexy man. Her attitude in the first book gave me pause, I wasn't sure I'd like her, but I actually liked this story even more than the last!
I loved to hate Vanessa, she was the perfect villain!

I also enjoyed catching up with Cinderella and Dane from the last book!
The end was great, well thought out and I can't wait until the next one.

NYXE

A well developed science fiction tale ~ Review by Jennifer

If you didn’t get a chance to catch the box-office smash “Lucy” well, do not miss out on Nyxe; she could easily stand toe to toe with the aforementioned heroine. The author has a definite voice and this is not another predictable “impending doomsday” story.

Nyxe is genetically enhanced and awakens in a research facility after a post-apocalyptic catastrophe took place, and has been saddled with a huge task of rebuilding the world as we know it, with the help of an AI presence. I feel like people even in futuristic times of post-apocalyptic worlds, wish they could get back to nature, to simplicity; a world that seems more authentic and less automated.

Reminds me of why I have a good deal of respect for science fiction writers. It can’t be easy to create or build upon a world in an era that technically “hasn’t gotten here yet”. Read and enjoy.

"I was born in ruined ashes; a desolate, abandoned world my forefathers left behind as a gift of their legacy.
Armed with an advanced underground base and my trusty AI caretaker, my long dead ‘parents’ were courteous enough to leave me a message that I should rebuild the planet they destroyed. " ~ Nyxe (as seen on www.psiraise.com)

Book Description:

Nyxe... a genetically enhanced young woman awakens in an underground facility where she discovers a mission left behind by her forefathers – rebuild the earth.

After waking up nearly 400 years into the future at an underground research facility long after our world destroyed itself, Nyxe finds herself alone and abandoned. The only candidate left to rebuild our shattered world with the help of an Artificial Intelligence designated to be her caretaker.

Chances of her rebuilding our world alone though? Slim, maybe none. From the hardships of uncovering our dark history to the battles ahead in reconstructing a colony capable of sustaining human life – Nyxe, the girl once known as ‘Test Subject 17’ has her work cut out for her with no other option but to press on no matter how turbulent the storm gets.

Determined and sure yet still human – can this woman really be the only hope mankind has left?

Renouncer of the Flame

Renouncer of The Flame

Renouncer of the Flame

I think George R. R. Martin has some competition! ~ Review by Desiree Frank

Renouncer of the Flame is one book I will not forget anytime soon. When I read Game of Thrones I pretty much needed a spreadsheet to keep track of all the characters and plotlines, but definitely didn't have that problem with this story. J.R. Copeland created some truly rich and complex characters as well as philosophical themes that encourage the reader to draw parallels to their own lives. A good book will entertain me for a few hours, but this one left me thinking about it for several days afterwards. I would highly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys great adult fantasy fiction!

The Sword of Telemon

THE SWORD OF TELEMON

Review by Arky  TOP 1000 REVIEWER

I could tell that this author really enjoys fictional worlds, I do as well and was excited to read this one. Dr. Eiland has put together a wonderful cast of characters in this book and it was really a fascinating read. Orfeo tries to find his brother on a never-ending adventure. He finds that his brother is working as a galley slave. Orfeo and his friends have to save the prince before it is too late. I thought that the author did a great job with the scenery and making things exciting. There's a lot of description in this book, which really made me feel as though I was there. Will read another from this author.

Book Description:

A young Achaean prince (from northern ancient Greece) is captured in a raid. His younger brother Orfeo, and a group of warriors are sent on a mission to look for him.

Telemon, a legendary warrior, and Zurga, an elderly wanderer, are soon joined by Clarice, a girl who is a master of disguise.

To their dismay they find that the kidnapped prince has been made a galley slave and that the maritime power of Thera plans to conquer the entire Mediterranean. Can they avert disaster?

“This story is a story that no matter where you come from or how people see you, you can still be a warrior.” ~ Cayce Hrivnak

I have always been interested in ancient cultures, and during my travels to collect rugs I visited many areas of great antiquity. It was this experience which promoted me to write the Orfeo Saga. My foray into the private investigator genre was stimulated by my time in Los Angeles. ~ Murray Lee Eiland Jr.

EXCERPT: CHAPTER ONE

Faint sounds seemed to mingle with the breeze, as they came first as distant whispers and then in wave-like gusts, now louder or softer, resounding along the valley walls and over the hilltops, carrying both a pleasant reminder of spring-awakened splendor and a sense of unease. Subtly the day’s stillness dissolved into disarray, as the restful rippling of the clear mountain stream now found counterpoint in the echoes of a great bronze bell, erupting in a voice of gentleness and power. A sense of alarm arose, and faint cries of assembly carried from the valley, where men ran to join the commotion around the king’s great tent.

Orfeo had been sitting on a flat rock overlooking the encampment when he recognized that something had gone wrong. Raising himself more in disbelief than concern - as though his repose on the meadow and the bleating of his small goat flock made mockery of the frantic shouts below - he fastened his sandals and bounded from stone to stone toward the path and then raced in long loping strides down the hill. The goats could look after themselves until he found them later. When King Kiros summoned his people neither kinsmen nor retainers delayed, and now the mounting noise from below gave further spur for haste.

As he entered the encampment Orfeo heard first the clatter of swords in preparation for use before isolated words gave him a glimpse of what had happened. “A raid,” he heard repeated. Someone must have seen danger approaching, and the image brought with it a vision of the Hannae from the north, galloping on their small, swift horses, bringing fire and pillage in their wake. Once as a boy Orfeo had cowered in a thicket of juniper as the swordsmen had stood their ground against invaders and had finally driven them off. Now he was ready to stand with the others, still a boy, perhaps, at sixteen summers, but able to wield a sword and hold his place in the line. He ran toward his father’s tent, dodging nimbly among the assembling warriors. The bell now sounded at close quarters and sent a chill of excitement through the crowd. Standing on his platform before the great tent stood the king with raised arms. Three armed men had pushed before him with weary movements, as if they had run a greater distance than the others and had already encountered the enemy.

“What news do you bring?” asked the king.

“We were too late,” gasped the leader, Tyron, falling to his knees in shame and frustration. “They reached the ship before us and sailed.” He was trying to catch his breath. “They jeered at us as we reached the shore.” He held his weapon’s hilt in smoldering rage.

“Then they are captive,” said the king as if the admission robbed him of all inner peace. “My oldest son, Herron, and three companions were attacked today and seized by raiders.”

Those in the crowd who had not already heard the news reacted both with shame and anger.

“It was a slave ship of Tyrian merchants,” added Tyron. “They landed several raiding parties, and they took captives among the men of Ikea to the south.”

“Herron must be returned,” said the king with a voice more focused upon a course of action. “We must rescue or ransom my son from the slavers.”

It's All Fun and Games

It's All Fun and Games (Available for Pre-Order on inkshares)

Book Description:

When six high school friends spend a weekend Live Action Role Playing they discover that the game world is both real and very, very deadly.

Fifteen year-old Alison Duggan finally gives in and joins her best friend TJ’s regular gaming group on a weekend of adventure that he promises “will be fuuunnnn.” Not long after the adventure begins, however, the friends find themselves transported from Earth to a world filled with both magic and danger. Suddenly, what Alison expected to be a relaxing weekend being geeky turns into a fight for survival against brigands, kobolds, and other nasty characters as the group tries to finish their mission…or at least get back home.

It's All Fun and Games is the first in a series of Young Adult novels that follow Alison and her friends as they adventure through the game world.

Prologue

“Run! NOW!” TJ shouted, yanking at Alison’s sleeve. Her eyes were focused on the ground, where their friend lay, twitching slightly. An arrow shaft stuck out of his chest. Her first thought was that it was all part of the game – this was some elaborate way of pranking the newbies on their first outing. If so, it wasn’t very funny.

But no, there was no way that arrow was fake. The noise it had made when it struck. The blood that was rapidly spreading across his clothes. The raspy way he was breathing and the saliva slowly trickling from between his lips. Alison felt another yank on her shoulder and TJ shouted, “Leave him for now!” She shrugged off his grasp, reaching down to try to drag her injured friend by the collar. After only a few moments she gave up, however, recognizing the futility of the effort.

A sudden force struck her in the shoulder and spun her around. Dazedly, she looked for whoever had hit her with a bat and was surprised to see no one standing nearby. Instead, she found a second arrow stuck in the wall, still quivering with spent energy. She reached up to her shoulder and felt a dent in the metal of her breastplate. A quick look revealed that the archer in the woods had drawn a third arrow and was fitting it to his bow, a determined look on his face. With a cry of anguish and one last look at her fallen friend, she turned and fled after TJ and the others.

Review by Hristijan Zafirovski

I've been looking for a Greek myth book that actually stays true to Greek Mythology. It seems like everyone wants to be different and put a modern twist to it. I was really pleased with this one. I have never read anything written in modern times about mythology with this level of sophistication. There are references to popular Greek myths that’s really entertaining and some that I actually wasn’t all too familiar with so I learned something new. It’s all really subtle, it doesn't hit you over the head with history, but for those of us who love this stuff, I mean really want to escape into it, it adds a lot of texture and details. I really felt like I was there in ancient fantastical Greece with all their day to day concerns. I’m really looking forward to the next one. I really hope it doesn’t fizzle out like other trilogies seem to do recently. Great read! Very impressed so far.

Book Description:

He thought he knew everything about love, until she made him redefine it.

When Eros, the devil-may-care god of love is pricked by his own arrow, he falls for the most unsuitable of mates, a mortal woman he has been ordered to destroy.

Without knowing Eros’s true identity, spirited, intelligent Psyche shows the god just what it means to be on the receiving end of his arrows, with all its sweet pain and torment, and all its rapture. Eros soon discovers what love can mean to mortals, what it should mean to the gods, and that he could quite possibly be one of the most powerful beings in Olympus.

Not all the gods admire this young upstart’s newly discovered powers. The laws forbid their union, and Aphrodite, goddess of beauty and passion, is determined to see Psyche destroyed. Furthermore, the two must deal with their own doubts about themselves and each other which threaten their fragile relationship as much as Zeus’s wrath. Will Eros and Psyche become the canon of all that love has the potential to be, or will they follow a tragic path, with lessons learned too late to save them?

Based on the Greco-Roman myth of Eros and Psyche, the heart of ancient Greece is explored, where the world of imperfect gods and goddesses are fatefully intertwined with the humans they rule.

EXCERPT:

Apollo, god of the sun, stood at the threshold of Aphrodite’s palace, holding a thin laurel tree branch that he gripped like a sword ready for attack. Aphrodite, goddess of beauty, gazed upon him calmly, reaching to her left for another plump, purple fig which she bit into slowly, her lush, pink lips and youthful cheeks defying the agedness of her glacial blue eyes.

“Where is he?” Apollo’s voice boomed through the elaborate corridors, causing the reliefs on the Corsican columns to tremble in fright.

“Where is who, dear brother?” Aphrodite’s melodious, feminine and effortlessly seductive voice was a sharp contrast to his.

“That addlepated twit you call a son!”

There was a flicker of interest in her eyes and she paused in her chewing. “Eros? Why, I have not seen him all day.”

“You lie! I know he’s hiding in here somewhere, cowering behind your skirts like the gutless mongrel that he is.”

Apollo raised his voice and shook the branch at the ceiling. “You hear that, Eros, you demi-god of riffraff and all that’s unholy! You are naught but a little craven! A spineless, useless miscreant!”

“Please lower your voice. You’ll disturb my peacocks that are resting in the gardens.”

“To Tartarus with your peacocks!”

“Oh really, Apollo, you’re starting to give me a headache. Could you at least explain what all the ruckus is about? Did he try to steal your phaeton again? Or did he lure away one of your water nymphs from your grasp? Perhaps if you had a more delicate touch they wouldn’t fly away so quickly.”

Apollo’s response was a withering glare that sent one of Aphrodite’s winged servants flapping away in fright. Aphrodite, however, remained unmoved.

“She did not give me the chance to touch her.”

He looked at the brown branch in his hand with pained eyes. It only had a few bruised leaves left hanging from the ends.

“A wood nymph. Daphne. He all but destroyed her. It is all his fault that she is lost to me forever!”

“Well unless he seduced her himself, I don’t see how that could be possible.”

“Do you not?” He shook the pathetic tree limb at her. “You’re the one who gifted him those blasted arrows!”

“Oh, pah! Eros's arrows cannot affect the gods. Love in that obsessive form is a purely human thing. You don’t mean to say that you, Apollo the noble, god of light and the sun, truth, prophecy, medicine, healing, archery, music, poetry, arts and sport, was affected by a child’s plaything?”

Conflicting feelings warred in Apollo’s eyes as he thought of the implications of Aphrodite’s comment. He shook his head as if it hurt, his voice softening slightly. “Eros is no longer a child. And...”

“And what?” She said coyly.

“And his damn arrows are getting more and more powerful!” All softness vanished from his angry voice.

“Is that so? Because I don’t hear of anyone else complaining. Is it truly the arrows that are getting more powerful, dear brother, or are you starting to be more prone to... weaknesses?”

“Eh?”

Aphrodite observed the evenness of her fingernails as she continued.

“Perhaps you are getting a little too old for your work now, dragging that gargantuan chariot across the world day in and day out along with that hot, ill-tempered sun. You must be quite exhausted. Perhaps it’s time you retired, settle down with a proper immortal wife and make lots of sunny little babies.”

“And who, pray, do you envision taking over my godly duties?”

“Eros has a strong arm with a phaeton. His phoenix is the fastest in all of Olympus. As for his archery skills, well, you can attest to that. He never misses his target, man or immortal, no matter how fast.”

“Hah! I would rather die a thousand deaths and be married to Hades himself!” Apollo spat on the immaculate marble floors. “I see what you’re getting at, little sister. And if you think I will ever give up my duties as god of light and truth, much less give it to that ne’er-do-well lying piece of toad spittle, you are very much mistaken. I don’t know what you’ve done with Eros’s arrows, but I will be watching him very carefully. One of these days, he’s going to slip up. And I will be the first to make sure he stays down.”

“Ugh, brother, you look so ugly with your brows furrowed thus. Please begone from my sight or you will give me frown wrinkles too.”

“Zeus forbid your beauty ever fades, Aphrodite. That is all you have to boast of, everyone knows brains are not your strength. But get this. There is already talk down in the grape valley of a maiden more lovely, even than you. Perhaps she could take over your duties, being that your rank has been surpassed.”

At last, a flash of true anger crossed Aphrodite’s celestial eyes. “Hah, what foolishness is this?”

“I’m surprised you have not heard. The mortals speak of nothing else these days besides the war between Troy and Greece, of course. She has apparently served as a lovely distraction. They say that had she been among those competing for Paris’s Golden Apples, the prize for being the fairest in all the world, she would have plucked it right out of your greedy little hands.”

Anger was turning the natural pink blush of Aphrodite’s cheeks a deeper, more crimson red. However, this only enhanced her charming beauty. “What is this? A mortal? A mortal woman more beautiful than I?”

“Aye, and more intelligent, honorable, and virtuous than you as well. Hah, but that is not much of a task, is it? Perhaps if you stopped staring at your own reflection so much, you might be aware of the great offense.”

“Enough!” She flicked her delicate wrist in his direction.  “You have gotten away with abusing my son in my very own home, you will not be allowed to say such things to me! Begone from here and take that daft branch with you. It’s dropping leaves all over my floor.”

“This daft branch is from a tree that was once the most beloved nymph in all the land! All because of your wretched son! You and everyone else will honor it!”

Without another word, Apollo stormed out, taking his sad, shedding twig with him.
The moment he left, Aphrodite rose with a speed that belied her previously lethargic position. Immediately, she moved to a shimmering fountain and gazed at her reflection. A frown was marring her beauty and a curl had fallen out of place. She replaced the golden ringlet immediately in to its proper position and sat touching the water. Her mood lightened as she gazed upon her stunning reflection. She touched the water lovingly.

More beautiful than I? She chuckled at the ridiculous notion.

“Show me this maiden who is said to be more beautiful than the winner of the Golden Apples, the most beautiful goddess in Olympus, I, goddess of exquisiteness, passionate love, and sensuous pleasure,” she commanded, smiling as her image continued to gaze back at her. For a while, it continued to reflect her divine face unwaveringly. Aphrodite began thinking of all the ways she would punish Apollo for his little lies.

Then, slowly, another face began to replace her own, blurring in the frothing water.

At first, Aphrodite did not look impressed, but the longer she stared and the clearer the vision came, the deeper the lines of displeasure marred her face. She leaned forward, picking up on the small details of the young lady reflected in the water. The goddess’s face grew darker with every passing moment. Finally, she gave a sharp cry and summoned her owl who swooped from a pedestal and landed on a meticulous finger that she extended for the bird.

“I want you to look for Eros. I need him here immediately!”

The snowy white owl nodded its consent and immediately flew through an open window. As it flapped away bidding the wind to carry him faster, the owl could hear the angry bellow of its mistress.

“How dare she!”

The owl’s feathers ruffled and he flapped more vigorously. He’d hate to be the object of Aphrodite’s rage.

Dragonfriend

Dragon Friend

Spectacular landscapes, amazingly graphic action scenes, gorgeous descriptions with plenty of detail... My absolute favourite scenes are the ones in which the differences in the world, habits, traditions and capabilities of humans and mythical creatures are displayed, with so much humour, insight and emotion, that a proper fantasy fan will relish in every discourse line and every thought shared telepathically between the characters. In this kind of a book, I like to be able to feel the story with all my senses, and the author writes using them - he shares the sounds and silence, the scents and touch, and shows you what he sees, so you can be immersed in reading, just the way a good movie will do, and even better. ~ Anita Kovacevic
Book Description:
Stabbed. Burned by a dragon. Abandoned for the windrocs to pick over. The traitor Ra’aba tried to silence Hualiama forever. But he reckoned without the strength of a dragonet’s paw, and the courage of a girl who refused to die.
Only an extraordinary friendship will save Hualiama’s beloved kingdom of Fra’anior and restore the King to the Onyx Throne. Flicker, the valiant dragonet. Hualiama, a foundling, adopted into the royal family. The power of a friendship which paid the ultimate price.
This is the tale of Hualiama Dragonfriend, and a love which became legend.

Chapter 2: Flicker

WHEN a Scream split the early evening sky, a dragonet lurking nearby almost spilled his mouthful of lemur intestines. What? He hated to be distracted from the spoils of his hunt. His green eyes narrowed against the glare of the sky-fires, the eyes of the Great Dragon which seared the world with their unrelenting gaze. One of those two-legged ground-creepers was trying to fly? Loops of grey intestines dangled either side of his jaw as he gaped at this spectacle. The creature thrashed its spindly, useless appendages as it plummeted from one of their fat flying balloons.

How awkward and ungainly! Imagine trying to fly with no wings?

A premonition prickled his scales. The dragonet’s mirthful gurgle snagged in his throat, replaced by a hissing stream of fire. Wrongness. The thin wail of the creature’s terror.

Before he knew it, Flicker sprang off the obsidian boulder he had adopted as his table, knocking his favourite meal into a patch of nearby jiista-berry bushes. He flapped his wings madly, taking him over a rocky outcropping before a neat flip upended him. Tail jutting skyward, he chased the creature down the four-mile vertical cliff which demarcated the south-western periphery of Ha’athior Island. Faster! Pump the wings! In seconds he whipped by acres of lush overhanging trees, a dozen dark-mouthed caves and a flight of red dragonets practising their song-dance of praise to the Magma Dragon, which roared beneath the roots of their Island.

At two and a half feet in wingspan, and just under two feet from muzzle to tail-spike, Flicker was no unusual size for a dragonet of his nine summers of age, but his smoky green colour was unique amongst his kin. His egg-mother certainly thought him very strange, especially how he studied the ways of the creatures above the cliffs. It’s dangerous for dragonets up there, she scolded him. The two-legs put dragonets in metal cages.

What a horror!

But the mighty Dragons of the mountain peaks sang to his spirit, and the doings of the two-legs were endlessly fascinating. How could such stupid, flightless creatures force metal and stone to bend to their will? They made absurd squiggles on animal-skin scrolls, and were so hopeless at hunting, they had to keep giant ralti sheep penned up next to their stone warrens. They travelled with their clumsy flying balloons and fought other Human warrens with metal sticks, instead of working together under a warren-mother’s wise guidance.

Well, this one’s idiocy had to trump them all.

A strange-smelling red liquid splattered his face as he tucked his wings in to accelerate, just a few tens of feet away from the creature now as it tumbled into the void. Flicker gasped with the effort. If it could just slow a little, maybe extend that skin covering to make wings, the creature might slow its headlong fall. It made another screeching noise which set his fangs on edge.

Down, down it fell. The cliffs blurred past, the heat increasing by the second, the rocks and long, trailing vines flashing past his wingtips. Flicker inched closer, measuring the creature’s trajectory. It would strike near the base of the cliff, splattering its brains out on the slope before being picked over by windrocs and other aerial predators. Would its brains make a tasty meal?

Regardless, his seventh sense impelled the dragonet onward. He had to save this creature.

Reaching out with his paws, Flicker gripped the creature’s body covering and began to flap mightily. Great eternal fires, it flew like a rock! It did not even pretend to help. Obstinately, he struggled on, ignoring the pain in his wings and joints. If he could just change the angles enough, drag it a few more feet in the air … foliage slapped his cheek. More! With a scream of his own, the dragonet allowed his wings to cup the air, slowing them at the expense of a tearing sensation in his major flight muscles.

Whap! They slammed into a leafy branch, bursting right through it in a spray of greenery. The creature hurtled through a patch of tangled vines, stripping them in an explosion of ripe fruit and a flurry of leaves. The resulting rotation almost flung him free, but Flicker was not done. He dug his claws into the creature’s soft flesh, and flared his wings again.

Another, sturdier branch smacked the creature in the side. Thankfully he missed that one, but lower down, there was a huge branch overhanging the red-hot lava flows a mile below. So low already! Right in the danger zone, beyond which even dragonets feared to venture. This was his last chance. Flap, flap and flap again! Wrench this lumpen creature by any means possible into the right trajectory, screaming, muscles burning, magic assisting … thump! They bounced. Rebounded twice more, and then lay swaying on a broken, leafy bed.

Flicker opened and closed his jaw.

I am awesome, he told himself, and fainted.

Excerpt:

Me bones ached as I dragged the wooden box off the top shelf of the cupboard and I nearly keeled over with dizziness, when I lowered the box onto the kitchen table. Stuffed amongst the jumble, looking abandoned and forlorn with her missing eye, I found Mary-Lou; Adorabelle’s rag doll. I’d promised to fix her doll after we went to the next market day, where we would barter fresh eggs with Maisey Flannagan for a couple of shiny blue buttons. She’d be missing her dolly.

Since being zapped by the witch I’d missed two market days as I’d been laid up in me bed. Never in me life had I ever been unable to scrape meself off me mattress and do a day’s work. A month I lay there with Daphnee spooning soup into me, wiping me chin, and me arse like an invalid. Too weak to stand up while me insides seethed, as I relived the moment over and over when Adorabelle was snatched away from me.

A crisply folded piece of paper lay on top of the box. I plucked it up and me knuckles grew white and me hand shook as I held it. I didn’t need to unfold it. I knew its hideous contents by heart.

I wanted to rip it to shreds or shove it down the throat of the next witch I encountered, but it was the only fragile link I had to Adorabelle so I tucked it into me pocket.

The outside door cracked open, spilling a splash of sunshine into the dim kitchen and framing Daphnee’s disapproving glare. “What are ye doing out of bed?”

I saw the moment the shock registered on her face, that I was dressed in me dead husband’s clothes and her voice rose an octave as she said, “What are ye doing?”

I dinna answer her, but grabbed Mary-Lou and stowed her under me belt. Daphnee rushed to me side, fair shrieking, “Ye canna go! They will kill ye!”

“I must go. She’s me only child, she’ll be wanting her ma.”

Me sister loved me. I could see it in every worry etched line on her face. I rested me hand on hers, looked her eye to eye, and said, “If it was one of ye bairns, ye’d go too.”

She held me gaze for a moment, and then nodded. “What will ye do?”

“Find Adorabelle and bring her home.”

“But what will ye do if the witches won’t allow it.”

I hauled the small sack I’d previously packed onto me back and me muscles groaned, but I ignored the pain and squared me shoulders and headed out the door. “I willna be asking them.”

Outside the bairns were tearing around the yard and I could hear Kellvyn out the back chopping wood. Daphnee smothered me in a hug, openly weeping, and I had to forcefully disengage her circling arms. “I dinna want a fuss so you can say me goodbyes for me.”

Still sobbing, Daphnee finally let me go and it nearly took all me strength to stand tall and walk the short distance out of her sight. As I disappeared from her view she called out, “Ye give wee Adorabelle a kiss from her Aunty and ye take care, Lauren. We’ll be waiting here for ye both when ye come home.”

Salty tears pricked me eyes and I scrubbed at them with me sleeve, but I dinna turn around, just kept taking one shaky step after another.
